Mi16 Water And Oil Air Cooler

Recommended Posts

205_sunderland

hi i purchased a 19gti 8v air oil cooler other day, i havent had a chance to try yet but will it fit on mi16 (ally block), the ally engine has a sandwhich plate for water cooler would it be possible to use that sandwhich plate and use it as air cooler if 19 gti 8v cooler plate wont work?

regards

mick

Water oil cooler is a bit of a misconception in my mind, used to think that myself, isnt it actually a heat exchanger, helping the oil to warm up quicker, for short journeys etc..?

after doing a bit reading on past posts look like theres no need for one so i think im going to just use one to be safe, give it a nice think layer of paint etc try and lower effeciency a bit and that would seem spot on for an mi:) by the looks of it, i was also contemplating twin fans so ill see how it goes

You shouldn't need twin fans if everything is working as it should. If you feel you require that little bit extra, you can bypass the low speed fan resistor and have the fan come on at high speed straight away.

If your rad cowling's been hacked around so that the rad can miss the inlet the std oil cooler will not fit,

sonofsam's spot on the std later so called oil coolers are heat exchanger's for better effency

my car is running on r1 bodies so all cowling standard, is it not possible to make a switch so the single fan will work when you like aswell as work as normal, p.s i will also bypass resistor as ya said;)

Yeah, it wouldn't be too difficult for somebody who understood the circuits. I suppose you just need to wire up a switch from the wires going into the thermostatic switch that's in the side of the radiator, just under the top hose. One is the positive feed (it's probably a red wire, I can't remember, but you can check with a multimeter), and the other 2 to run to the high/low speed circuits (you can check which is which by connecting the positive with one of the two other terminals on the plug). Then you can bridge a switch over either the high or low speed circuit.

i prefer to run th mi16 without the oil air cooler, ive never had any problems with high oil temps, but ive also use alloy finned sumps so thats helped keep things cool. if you must use an oil air exchanger, consider using one with a thermostat built in? ill be using something similar on my turbo engine as ill be cutting the water ways to the turbo, so any extra oil cooling will be a good thing.

If as Sonofsam says that the water cooler is actually for heating, can the water pipes just be blanked off so you have neither air or water cooler? Then swap the thermo housing for 8v with only 1 outlet for the top rad hose.

Would this be safe for a track engine which is running hot all the time?

Yes, you could blank them off or just fit the normal 8v to hose.

With an alloy sump it should be OK, jonmurgie didn't run an oil cooler of any kind or an alloy sump afaik on his old track Mi.
