[trackday_prep] My 205 GTI-6 Supercharged Track Car

Not really much to add that others haven't said above (more succinctly than me too) except to quote a sentence from the Capri restoration thread on the Turbosport forum (I have to quote this again as I really like the sentiment behind it)

Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want

Like you've said, there's more than one way to skin a cat. If you want to do things differently, sometimes you'll fail but at least you've learned from it. If you are successful, you'll still get resistance from those who choose to play it safe and go with conventional wisdom, but at least it's worked for YOU. Ultimately you might be the one changing conventional wisdom and re-writing the rules. The comments that you feel are being aimed at you negatively may be coming from those who have learned from their own mistakes and are trying to help you avoid those mistakes, but (ECU debate for instance) if you feel that your way is working fine and don't wish to change, then don't. The outcome will either be that you'll ultimately fail and realise that the advice you were given had an element of truth to it, or you'll be fine and prove to yourself that you were right (but unlikely to change the minds of the doubters  ).

I'm sure if you are honest about it for a moment, you'd admit that the good advice and things you have learned here far outweigh the bad advice. Don't they? :) . Some things (like suspension settings) can be so subjective that there will always be a risk with them, and unfortunately they can be expensive mistakes to learn from. That's life.

You can tell it's nearly Christmas, I've been far too diplomatic of late :)

Bloody hell just read it from start to finish. You lose track of dates and its like you have done it in a week or two, not nearly two years. Good work - its answered a few of my questions too :)

Surgie, as per craigo, comments weren't aimed at you :)

cragio, dont worry about the can of worm's, think people just need to blow off some steam..lol

GLPoomobile, xmas DEFINATLY calmed you down...lol, of course people like me will do something sometimes fail some work, but its people like me that dont follow like sheep just becuase someone has been doing it for years. but these old timers dont seem to like "change"

and no the ECU will still be there until the car is dead,,lol

Marksorrento205, glad i could be of assistance :)

well took the car out for its first drive monday,

all ok :( engine holding water :D

clutch needs slight adjustment :D

no knocking having the top mounts underneath , though see pic below for reason..lol

however the brakes :o . fook me i need bigger muscles :)

i bought a new 90 degree pipe so i can mount the airfilter down out the way, and will box it in, so there is no heat soak from the rad and no splashing from the wheels :D

ride height wont stay like that, i just raised it so it dont knock, will be lowering it next time i'm out there :D

Spiky,

Was there a lot of rattling and noises from the polyester hatch and poly rear window?

( I am very tempted to buy the poly hatch and window, only I use the car on the road as well, so I want some comfort left..)

I"m getting a poly bonnet. (with the same (BIG and UGLY) aero catch locking kit)

Have not installed the aero catch locking kit/poly bonnet, but I am thinking of spraying those BIG and UGLY aero catch bastards, white. (my 205 RFS = also white)

I have the same setup for the airfilter, BUT when hot (and fan kicking in) and idling, my RFS begins to misfire, I think it's because hot air from radiator fan blows into air filter...

(already changed: coil packs, map sensor, generator)

Some solutions I came up with for the 205 RFS:

Windscreen washer bottle:

DSCN3813.jpg

ECU housing (chopped Xsara Box)

DSCN3819.jpg

Wedge plate for exhaust manifold clearence

My 205 had headlight washers and a filler cap in the bonnet plate.

That's how I came up the idea.

Just tried the original washer bottle and tadatada

god angle plate too, does it now sit on std mounts?

Yes only solid rubber bottom engine mount. (205 diesel i think)
