Batfink 201 Posted February 1, 2007 I'm going to have a looksee at a secondhand straightcut gearbox and plate diff combo this evening. Are there any checks I can do on it without stripping it completely or do I have to really take the sellers word and go with any reciepts for its regular servicing??? pdd144c 0 Posted February 1, 2007 If you don't have it or know of anymore available Kev can you give me a shout please. Having never looked at one personally I can't help on the checks though...
Hilgie 16 2 Cars Posted February 1, 2007 As it is supposed to be straight cut gearbox it should have ALL gears cut straight, incl. the fifth. So that would be just a case of getting the 5th gear cover off and have a look.
Rob Thomson 6 Posted February 1, 2007 I'd be inclined to take the end cover off and have a sneaky look inside. Some of my mates have Mk2 Escorts. I know they've taken the top-cover off SC boxes to have a look at the general condition before buying....
Mandic 0 Posted February 1, 2007 How much do these boxes cost anyway? Cheers Ziga
Batfink 201 Posted February 1, 2007 Well Miles quoted me in excess of £3500 - realistically new you need to budget £5000 to £6000. Sadev charge 6900euros for their group A one I'm lucky enother to find one a lot cheaper
pdd144c 0 Posted February 1, 2007 The gearsets are cheap from Longmans, although I can't remember the price they quoted me off the top of my head. Second hand boxes seem to go for between £1000 to £1500 from what I've seen. Just can't find any right now! For 5-6k you should be able to get a sequential box! Batfink 201 Posted February 1, 2007 secondhand maybe but new you then have to buy all the other extras. Sadev's extras list is £3k!!
Mandic 0 Posted February 1, 2007 LOL, You can stop this is way too much for me, Thanks anyway Cheers Ziga
phatgti 0 Posted February 1, 2007 You need to have a look at the dog gears as these are the bits that take the most punishment. You need to know the boxes history, cicruit racing boxes tend to get more abused as people with cash tend to just bang through them without the clutch and then pay for a rebuild. If its been on a rally car people tend to use the clutch more as the cars take more of a beating anyway so the drivers tend to look after them more. They can be driven without a clutch once moving but its kinder on the dogs to use the clutch, it tends to create large burrs on the tips of the dogs. Take the drain bung out and look for metal filaments, its normal to get small stuff but you don't want no chunks falling out. Most gearsets are around £2000 so beware of buying a box that needs new gears/dogs. Put it this way, i know of a guy who's newly rebuilt gearbox was used for Mark Smiths Alfa touring car last season after he blew his dog box up at Thruxton, the box was only used for a 20 minute race and in that time the clutch was only used to drive out of the garage and the race start itself - we stripped the box afterwards to find the dog gears were scrap metal - £500 on bits plus labour time to build it. Bally 4 Posted February 7, 2007 WOW, after seeing this post i went straight and collected my close ratio straight cut box. You all wont believe where I had it. After I had turboed the car, the box wasnt useful anymore so i removed it by a mate and replaced it with an mi16 box, and for storage at the time I threw it in an abandoned field meaning to collect it the next day. Been there for months now. Had to dig up so much bush to find it. LOL. Its great tho. I must be crazy.
