Flywheel Cover

Had the old girl up on a hydraulic ramp last week (1991 1.6) while replacing rear shocks. Anyway, while running around underneath her doing the old 'WD40 it to within an inch of it life' routine, I noticed that the flywheel was winking at me, leading me to conclude that I was missing a flywheel cover - there appears to be fixing holes for such a thing.

 

1. Should I have one in the first place?

2. Could I ballax everything if I don't get one quick?

3. Anyone got one for sale?

4. Exactly where is Lord Lucan?

1. Yeah you ought to.

2. Potentially yes.

3. Maybe, i'll have a look in the garage. But i know 205parts.com has plenty on the shelf if need be.

Can't see it being a huge problem to be missing it but better safe than sorry I guess. Should be plenty around, post a wanted ad and I'm sure you'll find someone with one lying around.

I don't run one mine without any issues, there isn't a very big gap for it to let anything in & it also allows any oil or water that gets inside to drain away faster / easier.

 

When I had the alloy sump fitted I couldn't get it back in so I left it off since, even though I have now swapped back to a tin sump.

 

Shergar is all over the place, dotted around schools in various glue pots.

All ive found those guard things to do is trap oil from weeping crank seals etc (as Graham has mentioned), which then ends up getting spat everywhere by the flywheel and contaminating the clutch. I certainly havent run one for the last year, and ive had no problems at all.
