Guest bazc Posted January 28, 2007 Hey, i've recently bought a 89 205 gti 1.9 with 122k, I changed the oil yesterday for some fuchs 10/40 semi and a purlex filter.took it for a drive today and when engine was warm and idling oil pressure warning light flickered on and the stop light and the guage went into the red. before the oil pressure wasn't great sat on the first white line at idle and about half way on normal driving, now its sitting on second line. Oil temp guage doesn't seem to be working either Has anyone any idea's what i should check first? Oil level is right
taylorspug 7 Posted January 28, 2007 (edited) Check that the pressure switch isnt leaking. Ive had this yesterday with a 1.9 8v, the low pressure light was on but the gauge read fine. When the oil was fully warmed up (and at its thinnest) it was pissing out of the switch and the light was coming on. Changed the switch, problem solved. As a rule dont trust what the guage reads as they can vary wildly. My MI used to read virtually nothing (on the 1st line during normal driving), but putting a master gauge on showed it had over 4 bar at 4000 rpm. Grim.Badger 15 Posted January 29, 2007 Check that the two sensors above the oil filter are fitted okay, as Taylorspug said, then check the wiring for both is intact. If these are okay then I'd change the smaller sensor (pressure switch) which controls the stop light. It is possible that you have a serious leak and already lost all your oil so it's best to double check your oil level. However this sounds like a problem I had with mine that was caused by a blocked oil pump pickup so if the above doesn't sort it then I'm afraid you'll probably have to get the sump off, then examine the gause on the pump. I found it best to remove the pickup and take the bottom shield off the pickup. Mine was clogged with loads of silicon sealant strings that had come away from between the sump spacer and block after my engine overfueled.

I've had this happen with the switch. when they are damaged they do leak alot of oil. You may notice that there is oil left on the floor when it's parked up (more than normal for mine ). Have a look at the block on the front of the engine were it meets the g/box there are some cooling fins and they get full of oil.
Guest bazc Posted January 30, 2007 now the clutch is slipping and there is black oil coming from between engine and gearbox and pressure is getting worse
Grim.Badger 15 Posted January 30, 2007 I'd guess then that the flywheel end crankshaft seal has gone and is shedding oil. You'll have to take the gearbox off and replace the seal, haynes has a good guide on this iirc. The clutch will also be useless now so budget for replacing it. You may as well get your flywheel skimmed whilst it's all apart as it shouldn't cost much and I think you'll also need an input shaft seal. Make sure you clean the bellhousing before putting it back together to avoid cross contamination of the clutches.
