Need Help With Part Identification

Could someone please tell me what this part shown in the pictures below is?

 

It looks to me like some kind of filter but im not sure. What ever it is, it looks like it needs replacing as it has seen better days :D

Hi,

Thats no filter, that be your brake compensator for the rear brakes, leave well alone.

ahh ok would make sense considering its a copper pipe going in and out of it. Ok im staying well clear

Personally, If you are leaving well alone, I would mix some oil and grease in a container and smear it all over the valve, perhaps soaking in WD40 first. This will stop it rusting any more than it already has.

OR, you could fit an adjustable brake bias valve in there for when you go racing :D

I buffed my old one up very gently with a wire brush and sprayed over it with waxoil.
