There are liners with bigger bores to buy, but they tend to be quite pricey.

I think you can bore the existing liners to 83.5-84mm maximum without any major risks.. But I wouldn't take it any longer than that.

The iron block can safely be bored to 87mm and probably 88mm as well so it's a better starting point for getting a big-bore-XU!

Yeah thats the only option really, I think 83.5mm is the most you can hope for in an alloy block.

I seem to remember some people saying that some iron blocks will overbore further than others so you need to do your research. Have a go with the search function and you'll find loads on the subject.

why you don't want the iron block? they are stronger and more cc.

it's only a few kgs weight increase.

Hilgie is right, there is nothing wrong with an iron block.

as regards to using an iron block, i was hoping to fit the liner/internals with the block in the car to save hassle/lack of space. i've know come round and am going to be putting an iron block in.

the liner sets on hi flow were to expencive to even consider.

a few more q's then, if i may,

1, will an xu9 crank fit in an xu10?

2, are there any cranks that are 90mm stroke, i like the idea of having around 2066 rather than 2055, it's a more convincing 2.1l.

3,will the xu9 head fit on an xu10?

i've tried a search but can't find anything that doesn't confuse me.

thanks for the help.

When people state the weight differences do they take into account the weight of the water held in the jacket of a wet lined block which must be a few litres?

thats a good point but it would take 14 litres to make up the difference (1L of water weighs 1KG)

@brianthemagical:

1) yes it fits. it's 88mm vs 86mm stroke

2) there is a 92mm crank (from a 2.1TD engine) and a 96mm crank from a 2.2-16V HDi, both fit the bearings, just the crankcase needs little modification to make the crank turn over.

3) yes...heads can be swapped
