Beastie 1 Posted January 23, 2007 as above, can the cam shaft bearing journals be reground, mine are in prety bad shape. thanks. Yes they can and very easily too. However the camshaft will no longer fit the head because the journals will be too small so you would need to line bore the parent bores in the head so that they will take a shell bearing of the correct diameter to match your undersize crankshaft. I don't have a head in front of me but there is also a good chance that the studs are going to be too close together to allow you to bore the camshaft bores out this much. Buying a replacement camshaft is going to be a whole lot cheaper
brianthemagical 1 Posted January 27, 2007 thanks. i meant the journals in the head, not on the cam, which i think is what your reply was suggesting. thanks anywho, i'll no doubt be used in the future.
ALEX 98 1 Cars Posted January 29, 2007 I had an head that picked up bits of metal on the cam bearing faces. When I removed the little plastic filter in the head it was packed full of bits of swarf from the big end / main bearings that had been munched up by the crank due to lack of oil from the previous owner. The little filter inside the head (you have to remove the head to change it) did a good job of stopping most of the swarf but it had a little hole in it as it was quite brittle anyway, this let enough swarf from the engine to enter the cam journal bearings. Only one of the bearing faces in the head was damaged (the feed end) and I didn't have the buget at the time to source a new head so I put it back together. I checked it though when it ran with the rocker cover off (rags at the ready) to make sure pressure would build up enough to feed oil to the far cam journal and end spray nozzel. There seemed to be still plenty of presure (even more than before with a new unblocked head filter). The engine ran for 30,000 miles without any problems until I got hooked into engine building and decided to build another engine, this time on a bigger buget.
