GLPoomobile 958 Posted January 22, 2007 (edited) Was buggering around yesterday and decided to remove my instrument cluster. There was bugger all room to get at the end of the speedo cable to release it from the cluster (I hate that bastard connection ) and I unfortunately ended up wrenching the cluster away, which left the cable sleeve in it's original position but the actual cable was still in the end of the instruments - so in other words I pulled the actual cable about 6 inches through it's sleeve. For this to happen, it would have obviously pulled out of the gearbox end as well. I pushed the cable back into the sleeve when I reconnected it, and I have glanced down at the gearbox and and it still apears to be connected back there, so my question is will I have caused any problems bt doing this. I'm really not worried about whether the speedo works (needed a new cable anyway, and have GPS to go by), I'm more concerned about whether I'm going to end up losing gearbox oil by damaging the gearbox end. I have to drive up to Edinburgh at the end of the week so won't be good if I lose all my GB oil Also, I have heard that you can fit a longer 405 cable, is this true? I'm guessing that if I do this it will make it easier when removing/fitting the instruments as there will be some slack to pull through the bulkhead giving more room to get your hands in behind. welshpug 1,657 Posted January 22, 2007 should be fine, all its done is slide up the outer cable. yup a 405 cable is 4 inches/100 mm longer.
Guest rich1977 Posted January 25, 2007 Ive done the same to mine while changing my dials but speedos packed up now do I need to go and buy a new cable? and will this solve it or do I just need to remove it and make sure the cable goes completey down the outer sheeving ? j_turnell 137 3 Cars Posted January 26, 2007 You may need to take it out the gearbox and have a look, quite simple just pull out the rubber bung that slides in the side and holds the cable in and then pull it out.
Phil H 16 Posted January 26, 2007 snap...same thing on mine happened today...looks like I'll be having a peek underneath in the morrow to see if mine has pulled out the final drive.
