Got The Vauxhall Digi Dash Going Today

Recommended Posts

AndyR

Got the rev graph counter working from the Senator dash I have, just hooked it up in the engine bay to test it, looks sweet.

Just need a spare GTi dial pod to fit all the vauxhall electronics into now and I can install it straight into the 205.

Couldnt get any pics as I had to hold +ve and -ve down on the battery myself!

once youve done it, do you think you could write brief details for the articles section, i would be really intesested to know how this works, in case i ever come accross one in the scrappy.

It was quite straightforward to get the thing working, the hardest bit would be the speedo becuase of a "converter" needed to change the movement of the cogs in the diff into electrical signals that the digi dash understands.

Basically the astra/senator dashboard has 2 plugs going into it, all you would do is send these wires to the 2 brown multiplugs under the dash in the 205, the digi dash doesnt have a gauge for oil temp but does have a voltmeter instead, so you would loose/gain some thing from installing it. Im just interested in that rev counter!

do you think this could be wired up on an xs?

What modifications have to be done in terms of physically fitting it?

Cheers for your help.

It could be wired upto anything as long as the engine has the outputs to drive the different instruments (like temp, pressure, revs, etc)

The pod for the vauxhall is about 2 or 3 inches wider, either cutting the dash in the 205 to fit, or what Im gonna try is mount the vauxhall electronics in a empty 205 instrument pod so i can change back or swap it if I get another 205.

sounds like a good idea to put it in the 205 pod.

let me know how it goes.

I am definatly going to try and find a dash, now what parts are essential for the conversion.

Vauxhall digital dash display, including the 2 loom plugs to plug into it

A speed sender from the vauxhall gearbox to allow speedo to work

The dash is found in Mark II Astra GTE's

I got mine from a Vauxhall Senator 3.0 CDI (But just try find one now!)

Also a digital dash is available in the Mark II senator 3.0 CD which doesnt look as good in my opinion.

I dont know, Ive never seen a sender and have no idea how they work, youd have to do some experimenting yourself, let me know how you did it! And if you can find me a sender that would be great cos Ive not got one!

Hi, might not be of much use but a year or two ago i had a new gearbox from a 1.8 406. The sender unit in the gearbox that ran off the driveshaft sent a electric current and didnt drive a speedo cable. Dunno where the current went but i guess either the speedo or Ecu.

Hmm that is handy to know... do u remember if it was a BE gearbox like the GTi's use for XU engines?

all late pugs should have the electronic sender from the box, This thens goes into an interface module and off to the Speedo.

don't know if they work the same, but my sat nav needs a speed pulse input. most modern cars have this (my golf does any way!) but you can buy a pulse generator if you are fitting it to an older car. assuming the speedo uses the same standard then this should work. it fits in-line on the speedo cable i believe. if you search the web for pioneer satnav most of the site's that sell the satnav sell this aswell. Dont know if it of any help, but thought i would mention it anyway!

hey andy, were you working on the dash yesterday.

how is it going.

I have been looking a nova sites (i know!!) as they seem to have the most info on fitting in to a different car.

Just hope that the speedo sender unit is compatable with my gearbox.

I can not seem to find the plug under the dash that everyone was talking about.

Does anyone know exactly where this is.

cheers

Id be surprised if the pug sensor works with the vaux dash.

There are two different senders for the vaux dash too, if you send the wrong number of pulses to a particular dash the speed will read wrong, think from memory there are some dip switches on the back that may have something to do with setting the pulse number, but i could be mistaken.

If you look on migweb there is probably some technical data about the dash itself somewhere.

chip,

was thinking of trying the sender unit from the astra in my gearbox.

failing that use some kind of converter. I think that is what jose did.

If you can physically fit it that seems like a good idea.

HOWEVER, i dont know if the senders are before or after the diff, and if the ratios are different between the diff on the pug and vuaxhall then it will mean it will still read wrong.

yeah it seems like a bit of a long shot.

do you know the way that I can do it.

I might try asking a company that deals with milage alteration etc.

If jose is about and doesn't mind telling use how he did it then it would be great.

cheers for advice chip

Chip, there is a divider switch, cos we got the senator reading some silly speed when we were going along as we had it set wrong

Its worth a try with the GPS thing as well will have a look, cheers!

AndyR where exactly is the multi plug?

I dont know if youve got a GTi and if you havent, Im not sure if these plugs are there or not (most likely they are)

You need to put your head in the drivers footwell, not very comfortable but hey, and look upwards.

Remove the plastic shroud which stops your knees interfearing with all the wires its held on with a few screws.

Now your looking up, you need to be looking near the steering column and the side of where the heater matrix goes, quite high up in the dash I genuinely dont know if they can be seen or not without removing the dash... dont do this... it isnt worth it cos the dash will never go back how it was!!!!!!!!!
