Rev Counter Problems In A Turbo Diesel

Recommended Posts

yeti-dj

hello, just fitted the dash that has a rev counter into my turbo diesel as the previous owner had killed the last dash. I think i have all the wiring in place right as the rev counter did work for a little bit but has since died for some unknow reason. I know the diesel rev counter has 4 wires to run it and these are all conected properly.

By my figuring it can only be either..the rev counter itself..the TDC sensor or the wiring or am i missing something important ?

Question is,

1:-is there any way i can test to check that the rev counter on the dash acually works without going and buy another dash, i do have several GTI dashes that i can use if they would work???

2:- is there any way to test the TDC sensor is putting out the correct signals and what should they be before i buy another one???

sorry its a diesel but the second this is fixed the sooner i can get on with re-wiring my little MI16 so please help if you can

cheers........

IIRC the tdc sensor on the TD kicks out between 3 and volt signals soyou can always check you are getting these, if not the try a new TDC sensor. If you doget the voltage check at the multyiplug for continuity then check the actual plug tothe rev counter for voltage. More than likely a wiring fault somewhere.

the tacho is fused so its worth checking the fusebox before you go any further seeing as it did work briefly...

Right i have checked the wiring and they all seem to be working, i have got 4 wires going into the dash....an earth, a 12volt supply and then the 2 wires from the TDC sensor numbers 112 and 112D. Both 112 and 112D have been checked. If i connect a meter between the dash board plug and the plug that connects to the TDC i do get a reading so the wiring seems fine. But if i connect it all up and run the car and put a multimeter onto the plug from the TDC i get no voltage from it at all?

Anybody know if the wires 112 and 112D should have power to them or maybe an earth as if tested they have neither, they just lead to the dash and thats it??

thanks for the help....
