Ideal Gearing For My 205 Mi16

Recommended Posts

Dazza

I have searched for some info in the archive but failed to get anywhere with my question GEARING .

I have a 205 with a new rebuilt MI16 going in with ported head/528 cat cams ,balanced bottom end etc etc ,i use the car for trackdays and do drive to the circuits although the car is stripped and caged etc etc .

Whats the best option's 1.6 GTI BOX . 1.9 GTI , MI 16 BOX or final drive from the MI into the 1.9 ?

Mostly i use 3rd and 4th ,say 50-120 mph on track obviously dependant on the circuit .

Thanks all ...Dazza....

1900 ratios with a 4.4 final drive. Drop me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a couple of excel spreadsheets with everything loaded you can use to see speeds in gears, rpm drop when changing gear etc. Basically the above will give you about 105mph at 6k, so 120 ish at the redline in 5 with an Mi. Std 1.9 with do 65 in 2nd where as this will do 70 in 3rd (on an 8v 6k redline)

Thanks ive sent you PM ,and i forgot to add my MI 16 engine will be limited to 7600 rpm's if that makes any difference .I did like the 306 Rallye gearing and would LIKE a box that close ,i need it to get through the 2-3-4-5 as quick as it can but must be still pulling at 120 mph as some of the tracks iam used to we can hit top end speeds .

I use a 1.9 box with 1.6 final on my track car, I still manage 4k@7-mph for cruising on the motorway to and from tracks, and gives me long enough legs circa 130mph which I just touch at the ring, so decided to stick with it, although I have a 1.9 Mi final box I'm thinking of testing a bit.

Ive modified my 1.9 box with the mi final drive....although I have not got the mi rebuilt yet and on the road

so I cant wait too see what its like.......will be mainly used for track days at knockhill etc.

Whats the 1.6 box with the mi 5th like?????

I have got a few boxes lying around so i may create a road box in case i dont like the 1.9 with mi fd

have a look at Seans, thats what most of us have used.

Thats very helpful especially the speeds in each gear ,iam right in saying that the 1.6 standard gearbox appears the best for track use ,it was interesting to see the figures when the Mi final drive was used to .

Whats the 1.6 box with the mi 5th like?????

Pretty long, 4k in fifth is 90mph so its a good cruising gear.

If the car is likely to be used on the road & track I'd choose a 1.9 with 1.6 final drive, indeed thats what I'll use when I fit an Mi into my car this year sometime.

Graham.

Iam going to stick with the 1900 box and fit the final drive from the Mi16 box i have .I suppose its only a couple of hours work to try another box if i dont take to it ,Although i have been offered a straight cut box with a quaife diff ..... ttooooooo expensive ........
