Any Experience With.. Eccentric Top Mounts?

Recommended Posts

kate205gti

ive fitted compbrake eccentric topmounts to go with my bilstein coilovers and since then the handling is horrible! ;) i fitted them first with a bit too much castor i think as the steering out of corners became very heavy and caused the car to "snap back" on exit, so i dialled it round for cadwell and now it just skits all over the show like im driving on ice :P

on investigation it turns out I did have an ovalled hub (which explains my piroettes at cadwell :)) but even after a fitting a new hub its still not "planted" and very light on the steering now (too light)

is there anywhere or any way of setting these up to give better handling than normal top mounts - or should i just give up and go back to the group n rubbers that i had on there before?

i give up ;)

have you had the tracking checked? any adjustment in this area affects the tracking.

Doublecheck the tracking! (you can easily measure the toe yourself at home)

If the steering feels very light it may in my experience indicate that the toe is far off.. I think you probably want something between 0 toe to 2 mm toe-out.

I think this is the way it may be supposed to be, more castor --> more nervous car.

Even though it feels much more nervous it should be possible to drive it faster, it's just that the driver will have to coope with it :)

Increased castor has mainly two effects:

1. Increased camber gain (this is of academical importance on the 205 unfortunately)

2. Increased self-centering which may make the steering to feel heavier when turning at speed

I have the Compbrake top mounts and when I had the car laser tracked I had :

camber :-1

castor : can't remember but it was smack in the middle of Peugeot specs

and set the front wheels parrallel.

The rear was also bang on to Peugeot specs.

The car handles great, good turn and even when the diff loads up it doesn't feel heavy.

Are you running 309 wishbones ? Where are the mounts set to ? Pics might help.

Steve
