Exhaust System

ive been thinking (dangerous i know) about why peaple dont run straight through centre exit exhausts on there track cars.i know it wont look as good but it would be lighter as there will be less pipe used.only downside i can think of would be it will be bloody loud.also would the shorter pipe affect the engines state of tune?

it wont be much shorter at all, the centre of the car isnt that far away!

 

plus there arent any brackets there, more brackets = more weight :)

MMmm Side exit, hankering for one myself, will be a DIY job!

Dont think the sound scrutineers would like them, although I've no experience with them.

Also think they may be illegal?if your car didnt have one as standard. ie- A Transit van etc.

think you'd have probs MOT time.

But yeah it would be minimally lighter i guess, brackets dont weigh that much.

 

Yeah I guess it would affect an N/A car more. Wont be SO loud on a Turbo car thou :wub:

 

Wouldnt mind knowing more myself :)

Ive seen a turbo'd civic running the exhaust out sideways through the front bumper. That was on the road as well...not sure how legal it was. Should have a pic somewhere...

When you say straight through do you mean no silencers or just with straight through "design" silencers like group N systems or cherry bomb style.

 

I very much doubt you would get on any track nowadays without any silencers especially with a N/A car, it would be massively noisy too, and I mean like uncomfortably noisy as in you would need earplugs if you wanted to drive for any extended period of time.

 

Me and my dad have a pretty tuned MG midget that has a 1430cc A-series and we drove that without silencers just after we put the engine back in and to be honest it was just too loud to drive on the road, saw lots of nice orange flashes behind us though in the dark cos of all the flames - thats what happens when you don't get a weber jetted right!! :wub:

 

Back to your qs, I doubt there would be any benefit to be had in peformance either just because of a loss of one bend in the system as it isnt even that tight anyway.

 

Now on my hopefully turboe'd 205, hmmm no silencers and side exit..... :)

bales you mentioning the a series has got me thinking.as back in the day of the mighty mini with the lcb system.it was that what started me thinking about the centre exit on the 205.but they were bloody loud!

 

welshpug you could always grind the old bracket off i guess.i took the grinder to the spare wheel frame.its gone!

heheh that civic would have problems mot time as exhaust gasses need to exit cars from the rear,

i see he also is running a screamer pipe :/

i mean an exhaust thats runs down the ce3ntre line of the car exiting the rear under the back number plate not to the right hand side

like i mentioned in earlier posts........ like the LCB on the orginal mini,s :)

I always thought that when people talked about a mini LCB exhuast it was just the manifold (Long Centre Branch) and not the system itself????? Im probably taking rubbish and a bit off topic sorry

correct! the LCB is a description of the manifold alone, as the A series only has 3 ehaust ports.

 

for a 205 its better to keep the exhaust in its original position as ground clearance can be an issue on standard height cars let lone lowered ones. though that does depend on how well the system is designed and built.

 

it puzzles me greatly when I see popular exhaust systems poking awkwardly from the back spoiler when my 2.5 inch tailpipe fits perfecly without any modification.

Because it's a 205 and not a Mini :)

 

Although I think this does look ok, on the right kind of 205 ;)

As you can see from the pic below, the exhaust vears off under the petrol tank, so i guess it would take a few bends to get it back into the centre :)

As Sam really - shouldn't be too difficult at all to modify a centre pipe and fit it to a suitable backbox - plenty of room under the boot floor. You'd obviously have to make up some hangers - but, again, not difficult if you've a welder and a little metalworking skill. Failing that, one of these exhaust fabrication places (Longlife etc) would probably be able to help out fairly cheaply.

 

The T16s had centre exit exhausts (I realise that the engine's in the back and that most of the pipe work is manifold) and I'm sure I've seen 'works' 1.6/1.9 rally 205s with centre exit systems - ?

Just out of interest Sam, your exhaust on your 205 is single box isn't it, what does it sound like? is it too loud or not?

 

I don't suppose you have any videos of your car or anything or soundclips, I would be interested to hear what an xu10 turbo sounds like with one box and the induction sound and stuff.

But the later system is fine for std engine's and monor power upgrades, Any more and a better system is needed.

But the std exit under the N/S is the best place as it means less bends and as there's lot's of noise restrictions now it's better to be quitier.

I ran my 309 with a centre exit but it did have a Alloy tank so I didn;t have any issues with bends.

Mine is str8 through had it done S/S for £120 from downpipe back, one silencer and spare wheel removed and hangers made up,
