scumbag 0 Posted December 17, 2006 Hi all! Bought a pug on friday after 5 years of waiting for one. Bought it as a project, as needs a bit of exterior tidying (not lots), but just seems to have stupid niggling problems. Have searched the forum but cant find anything to do with the main trouble. current problems I think basically I just have a sticky starter motor, as sometimes when the key is turned you can hear the fuel pump but not attempt to start. A few goes and bouncing the car seems to clear, so tomorrow a new starter going on. Also having probs with the heater, which is also hopefully getting sorted tomorrow. The central locking motor on passenger is screaming, so broken clutch i think, so i removed that and the lock is now sticking!!! The rear seats were soaked after being steam cleaned by some retard and being left shut for months. (ming) the worst and most worrying thing, though, is the cars inability to stay running. most of the time it stalls when stopping, or will rev itself from 500 - 1000 revs and bounce like this. Even when well warmed up it has been doing this. then other times it will just idle perfectly. Someone said this could be an injector valve needing clearing. Any help on any of the above issues greatly appreciated. I have searched all over the forum but cant find anything regarding the main (revving and stalling) problem! cheers p.s reckon i should just sell it again!!!! Please discourage me! luggy 13 Posted December 17, 2006 (edited) Dont sell it, do a search on "poor idle" the topic has been covered a lots of times. Most of the problems that youll have with the car will have been covered in the forum and it will be far cheaper for you to learn to fix the problem yourself than get a garage to sort it. Welcome to the 205 brotherhood, where in Plymouth are you? Im in Plympton. Edited December 17, 2006 by luggy

Start motor: standard problem, do a search. A new starter may or may not fix it. Idle: Probably running rich (for one reason or another). Do a search, it again is a normal problem. Fixable but idle is never perfect. To save you cash: it isn't injectors. I have cleaned ones on two of my cars and TBH they only make any difference above 4k rpm. Feels a bit more spritely up there. 2052006 10 Posted December 19, 2006 Ref the sticking lock - when I was messing about with my driver's side c/l motor and door mechs in general, I somehow managed to stretch the rod linking interior door handle and door lock mech - make sure you haven't done this when taking the door card off - made my lock very sticky... nick 3 Posted December 19, 2006 Re idle. Make sure all the breather hoses are tight and split free and make sure the dipstick is a good tight fit in the tube (a new one from Pug is only about £6) Any unmetered air getting in through the breathers/dipstick will mess up your idle. scumbag 0 Posted December 19, 2006 I've got a feeling it may be not enough air if anything as it seems to be dying on the idle! The door lock is just sticky i think which cause the c/l motor to break, bought new switches for the interior heaters today. Fault persists;( so suppose at least only fan or the rheostat thing left to check now. Think it must be starter as if i put in second and push forward till it jerks then car starts fine. Over the last few days it has had probs starting 3 time, where the starter sounds weak, and it doesnt even fire. Because of these two issues together i think the starter likely a knackeR??? cheers and when you say the breather pipes, where would these be? I have little clue so pics would be great! cheers
Lucky Gti 0 Posted December 20, 2006 I had the exact same problem with my starter a couple of weeks ago . Stuck it in my local garage as i'm a bit of a lazt tw*t and he just cleaned up the connections and it was fine!! Bit fiddly to get at and the book says 'remove the inlet manifold'!! Yeah right!! He managed though, but he was a Pug mechanic for years!!
scumbag 0 Posted December 20, 2006 Yeah I heard that how its done too. I got a known working starter from the scrapper this morning. I wouldnt mind having a go myself but looks to be a pain in the arse!
