Engine Removal

Recommended Posts

frodo_monkey

Hi all,

I'm shortly going to take the std 1.6 out of my car in preparation for its new ripsnorting lump, so I thought I'd ask if anybody here has any top tips either for removing my existing engine, building up the next or refitting?

I'm picking up an engine hoist at the weekend, and therefore plan on lifting the engine rather than the car. I have my Haynes book of lies to hand, and a reasonable toolkit ;) I understand the Haynes is actually pretty good for engine removal?

I've done a search and looked on the main site for articles, and found some good stuff but thought I'd ask for a bit more (the search only seems to bring up older topics).

All advice gratefully received!

Thanks,

Si

Just double check that everything is undone and that the hoist is positioned correctly to lift the lump straight up. Take your time with it really. Good luck! ;)

Yeah, the Haynes book is good. Just follow it step by step and you'll have no probs. ;)

I did it the other week, I took it out the bottom though. I took the manifolds off and all the hoses and bunged up the holes. I then took off all the electrics and labeled every single one so I cant (shouldn't) get mixed up putting it back together. Once your sure all that's holding the engine in is the mounts, check it again. Then strap it to your hoist, take the weight, undo the mounts and up it goes.

Be sure to take out the drive shafts or you will wreck em

Oh, Taking the bonnet off is a good tip too!

Aye take the bonnet off. it only gets in your light and your way.

I dropped mine down. Box and all with it. Less chance of it swinging around and going through the windscreen!

Remove the front panel and rad bits. Label everything up. Hoses and wires etc. You might think, sure I'll remeber where that goes... until 2 months later when everything is back in and you're sitting with a bunch of stuff asking youresef where the feck do all these go!

Be careful you don't crack any plastic bits like the water distribution pipe if you plan to use it on the new engine. Even a wee knock on the way out can put a crack in it that you won't notice until you run the new engine and see water leaking from somewhere.

And as said above. Take your time, don't rush it and have patience. If it went in, it will come out!

As above, best thing you can do is remove the slam panel, rad and fan(s). Makes life soo much easier as the engine can turn and come through the front of the car.

No need to remove the bonnet or rad really, if you undo the bolt holdin the stay on you can prop the bonnet much higher up out of harms way. If youve got a decent hoist and a load level then it should pull out easy really. Just end up making more work for yourself.

Start from the bottom and work up, get it on stands, fluids, driveshafts, exhaust, clutch cable, speedo cable, gbox earths, then wiring, fuel lines etc, doesnt take long atall.

Never forget the Speedo cable or look like a d*ck when trying to remove the Engine

I find the best way is to remove all hoses, rad, alternater ect. less in there makes it much more easy. And undo the bonnet stay thingy

The last thing you want is for a hose to catch or put a hole in the rad or bend a gear linkage.

I find it easiest to drop the engine down, pull the box off then lift the engine out the top. save messing about trying to angle engine and box out the top, also means the battery tray/gearbox mountings can remain in place.

yeah get a load leveller too, makes it much easier to lift the engine/gearbox out without getting it caught on anything etc.
