Need Some Advice On Making Threaded Holes

Hi,

 

I'm finalising the details of my trumpet spacers, and i'm thinking forward to mounting them.

 

I want to make them quick to fit and remove, so making them with studs is ideal.

 

I specifically want to nake 1 end of the spacer with a stud, and there seems to be 2 ways to achieving this:

 

1 - Use a tap and die to make a threaded hole, and use threaded bar for the stud

2 - Drill a normal hole, and glue a bolt in place to act as the stud.

 

With my current knowledge and still (and tools) option 2 is the only chpoice currently. But for option 1, can people let me know exactly what tools i'd need to achieve that ? if the ost was reasonable I could be persuaded to go that route. I know nothing abouyt tap and dies other than somehow you end up with a threaded hole

ah superb, so all I need is a tap and the appropriate sized drill bit. Then some rod and some thread lock..perfect

Yes and some cutting fluid.

I would go option one as taps are really easy to use as long as you drill the initial holes the correct size. If you are visiting Gav any time soon you can borrow my set. If not go to a fastener supplier and ask them what drill and tap you need, this means you will not have to buy a complete set so keeps costs down. But you will need to buy a tap wrench but again these do not cost much.

 

But on how to us a tap. Make sure you lube everything up, you can buy cutting oil but I generally use WD40. Insert the tap, turn 1/2 a turn then back of 1/4 of a turn. Then repeat untill the treads are cut to the length you need, while using lots of lube.

 

Or if you are in a hurry and the metal you are cutting is soft chuck the tap in a drill and just go for it! I shall await the gasps from the engineering types on the forum.

cheers for the offer saw, i've just ordered the tap, drill piece and tap handle i need.

 

So next bit of advice needed. I need to glue the ali tube to the ali top and bottom plate. I also have about 1mm between the edges so that needs to be taken up. I have some bearing glue lying around I was going to use, any other recommendations ?

It's basically ali tube of ~50mm in OD being glued to a ~5mm thick and 51mm hole base/ring

 

Essentially the base of a trumpet, as you can see here

What about that liquid metal stuff you can get from most car places - I doubt very much your bearing glue will seal a 1mm gap

The liquid metal I have used before is ever so messy. What I would use is specialist Aluminium adhesive, can be found in most Marine suppliers, but for the price of it why not just get it welded up, much neater and no chance of leaks
