dommorton 0 Posted November 26, 2006 I resprayed the roof of my 205 a few months back using halfords rattle can 'Steel Grey' That's what you did wrong. You'll be very lucky to get a near match with an aerosol of that colour. It's a pig to match in. The main thing that'll make it look different is the clear coat. It's near impossible to emulate a gunned finish with aerosol lacquer. Big panels like the roof really stand out, and are hard to cover evenly with cans. Solid colours are more forgiving, but aerosols are generally best used for small repairs only.

Try spraying from left to right, or right to left- going in 1 direction only. start and finish spraying 6-9" beyond the panel and not overlapping the main body of paint with subsequent passes- the metallic element is more evenly distributed. Metallic colours will have varying shades, depending on the angle of application. Spraycans also seem to give different shades depending on the distance from the panel! I would paint down to the top of the first badge in full colour, and then lighter "mists" down towards the "gti" badge as there's less noticeable area. Large panels can be sprayed well with metallics, just takes trial and error!
madspikes 41 1 Cars Posted November 26, 2006 Thanks for the replys! I've used rattle cans on for flat colour loads of time to good effect, but as you said matallic is different. On the other side I fadded in the same way as you sugested, it looks better but the colour is just so difference. Along the sides of the roof I defo did just spray right to left and it made no real difference to the colour. Oh well, not going to use metallic rattle cans again. I expected some colour difference, but I might as well of used mat black instead of the steel grey for this quality of match! Humm... Maybe I should just spray the car mat black... or just get the black board paint out! Mad.
dommorton 0 Posted November 26, 2006 Have you clear coated it yet? makes a vast difference to metallic paint appearence.
madspikes 41 1 Cars Posted November 26, 2006 Yep, did the clear coat. The clear coat made it look even darker!
Paintguy 0 Posted November 26, 2006 Maybe a daft question, but did you shake the can REALLY well before and during spraying? I don't just mean a quick rattle around, but a vigorous shake for a good few minutes. You'd be surprised at how much paint settles, and the metalic flakes could all have been in the bottom of the can. This would cause it to look dark as the absence of flakes would make it reflect less light.

mattmk1 0 Posted November 27, 2006 My advice is dont use halfords paint, or any other 'retail' paint!! If you can find a local trade supplier theyll supply you with much higher quality 'rattle cans' but there likely to cost £10-£15per can. We normally use these when were just touching in small areas and its not worth firing up the booth, but the match is always perfect and they can be used to cover entire panels. PM me if you like, i may be able to supply you with some.
