1.6 Engine Running Problems

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

I wonder if anybody on here knows what might be the problem with my 1.6 Gti

Whilst driving along at around 50mph in 5th gear for example, the car suddenly starts to jerk, as if its cutting in and out - the engine rocks violently and I have to press the clutch to stop the car shaking to bits.

This doesn't happen whilst under strain, but only under light load, and tends to do it in every gear by touching the throttle gently. It's become so bad now, that you can barely drive it in traffic or around town.

I've recently replaced the head gasket and done a full head rebuild, timing belt, water pump, vacuum advance unit, plugs, leads, rotor arm and dizzy cap.

I spoke to a local rolling road specialist about the problem and he suggested changing the throttle position switch, which I did, but the car is still the same.

It also feels quite flat - no power, and takes longer than usual to get up to speed which is not good for a rally car !!!!

The only two things I haven't changed are the coil and ignition module - would it be a good idea to change these???

If anybody has come accross this problem before, please let me know.

Cheers

Aled

Have you had it on a Gas analyser to check the Co, was the ignition timing checked when you did the HG, maybe double check cam timing is right also.

Doof

I had very similar symptoms on mine a few weeks ago, turned out to be a loose earth connection on top of the gearbox.

I had similar on my TU engine for the past few weeks - turns out the throttle body venturi was icing up.
