Headlight Panel

Recommended Posts

I know inferno has a similar thread, but his is a bit more substantial than mine.

I have new headlight panels to put in, but my query is how does it attach to the inner wing under the wing is spot welded or held by habit!! and sealant, and does the wing have to come off?.

the wing has to come off as its bolted to the headlamp panel, and it is welded on, its also welded to the rad support crossmember and bolted to the slam panel.

looks like I will be only using the bit of the headlight panel I need, and cutting the rest off. Thanks for reply.

I do not really want to take wings off as they are original and don't want to risk damaging them, as I have heard they are held on with superduper gluey stuff!!. I only really need to replace the bottom front part so seems alot of work.

Localised patch repair should be fine under the circumstances.

Make double sure you haven't got more rot than you first thought though! the inner wings on these can get pretty rotten after all the years of salt and muck.

Most would just plate it but as you have the panel you may as well cut out a nice tidy repair patch.

You'll still need the bumper off which isn't much fun as it's sure to be seized!

I have all ready plated it 18 months ago. But I have the front end stripped doing engine bay and wheel arches and installing a TT engine. There is a small ammount of rust on inner wings where they meet headlight panels, that we could not get to properly with everything in the way lights, bumper, wiring etc.

That small bit of rust will become a hole I'm sure.

It'll be easy enough to plate whilst you do the repair in that area.

No you misunderstood, this is the main reason I have stripped the engine bay to get this rust, and replace the previously plated repair to headlight panel. As the rest of the bottom of the panel is rusted quite badly (not holed) but the top is ok hence only wanting to repair the bottom, hope explained it a bit better?.

I got genuine ones at just under £40 a side. But I am hoping being genuine they fit and last longer  .

Vern,What did you use to remove the old stonechip? Why did you feel you had to remove it surely it would have been offering some protection? What did you use to replicate the original stonechip you removed?
