Yimkin_FJ 0 Posted October 30, 2006 In anticipation (hah!) of a possible promotion, I'm probably going to get another car as a daily driver and keep the peugeot as a fun (standard) car, but get it back to mint. This would involve a respray. Any sprayers out there? Bearing in mind that mine is a sorrento green, and hence pearlescent, would this involve a significant extra cost over a 'normal' respray? The respray spec I'm thinking of is engine out, windows out, interior (but not dash) out. And.... I know this is a difficult question, as cost depends on the level of preparation, but how much would I be looking at for an 'as new' (i.e. not concours) standard? About a grand? Thanks for any help! PUGugly 0 Posted October 31, 2006 Whoo 1k for a full strip down, prep and paint in pearlescent is being a bit optermistic me thinks A good paint shop will charge a fair bit more for a good job. As good as the shell looks now as you strip the car and prep it you could find areas that need repairing, this pushes the price up. If you have the space you could strip the car yourself and at least clean it, do some of the repairs and rough prep it ready to go to paint. An advantage to this is you get to keep all your parts whilst the shell is at the paint shop so you can sort the engine ect, give it a good clean (no point having a lovely shiny body if everything bolted to it is caked in s*it!). Spray painters tend to take their time and never tell them theres no rush!! A disadvantage to this is that you will probably have to trailer the car to the paint shop. Pearlescent pain will need more layers than 'normal' paint, more time, more money! Another option is to use a cheaper spray shop. I used one in Ilkeston a while back and for 300 quid he respayed an Escort Convertable including filling the door locks and doing a bad boy one off bonet. Not the best job in the world but it looked neat and tidy, 100 times better than before the respray. At this price you can change the colour every year if you get bored!!! Paintguy 0 Posted October 31, 2006 Sorrento has only a very tiny amount of pearl in it (less than 5% iirc) and is mostly composed of black paint, so coverage isn't a problem, and it really shouldn't be any more expensive than a metalic colour, or even a 'flat' colour that is sprayed in basecoat and lacquer. Prices will vary wildly depending where you go, but if you're prepared to do some of the strip down work yourself, you can save bucket loads of dosh. This is the area that really eats into the hours, and hence racks the price up. Especially when you're working on a car that's over a decade old, and almost everything will probably be rusted or seized on. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

(from anyone not just your good self) Also would you do this at home and trailer the car to the spray dude? Or would it be done at their workshop? welshpug 1,657 Posted October 31, 2006 depends wether you want a full respray or just an exterior blow over. to do it properly you would completely strip the car down to a rolling shell, including doors tailgate and bonnet off, and maybe the wings if you want the wheelarches done too, not forgetting to remove and take the bumper spoilers and front grille along too. It would be nice to leave the master cylinder intact for example and not have to faff about bleeding the system upon re building... PUGugly 0 Posted November 1, 2006 You don't have to completley strip the car to spray it but it does make the job easier and neater. Any thing left on either needs masking up and spraying around or it will be the same colour! When doing the final prep it takes much longer to do if you gotta keep tapeing stuff up. Paintguy 0 Posted November 2, 2006 I'd say the guys above had pretty much covered it. The more you can strip off the better, both in terms of cost and quality. Clearly there's a limit to how much you can, or want to strip off, but only you can really decide that. You may be happy having certain items masked up and painted around, but others may not. Once you've decided on a bodyshop to do the work, have a chat with them about it. They'll be able to tell you what needs to come off, and what can stay behind. notamondayfan 44 Posted November 12, 2006 going to pay around £900 to get my dimma sprayed, but thats after a lot of prep work (without taking the engine out). its on a trolley thing at the moment, with no windows, doors, or bumpers. theres so much you can do yourself it seems daft to pay someone £30 an hour to remove parts a 12 year old could do! e30m3 0 Posted November 13, 2006 I've been quoted £1500 by a friend of mine to sort out some rust and paint my M3 if i strip it myself. That does include sorting the rear arches, rear number plate surround and scuttle as thy have rust on them. What you have to remeber is that the materials alone for my respray are going to come in at around £600. I'd quesion how good a job some one will do if there only effectively earning £400. The guy i'm using has just done a full respray on a FTO including fitting a body kit and i think it came in at around £3500 for a pucker job.
