Curse Those Compensators, My Car Eats Them!

Recommended Posts

Higgy

Arhhhh.

I hate rear compensators (1.9 discs). Bloody nearside rear wheel is not braking efficiently.

I had the same problem last year, and I am not spending another £40 on a compensator. Looking through the history of the car, it has had 3 rear compensators already, and a history of one rear wheel not braking correctly.

I have removed them and bridged with solid pipe. I am running GTi-6 brakes upfront, so from previous members reports am hoping that the rear end wont spin out

Got to fit a new master cylinder (GSF are really quick with online delivery!!) tonight and bleed the system, then hopefully back in for a re-test.

Higgy.

have you ever replaced the caliper?

i wonder if its piston might be sticking slightly, which wouldn't help - ?

Looks to be original one (although I do have a '01 one off a Xara VTS I could use).

I wound the piston out and cleaned the muck that had built up around the seals, I also did this on the sliders.

The piston winds in/out very easily. And no issues with the handbrake.

Yep.

Travel seemed fine to me with GTi-6 brakes. Plus that is what Anthony is using minus compensators and has said the back end does not lock up first.

Tried bleeding brakes last night, but developed lots of leaks after undoing fittings, plus fcuking ezi-bleed does not work as Peugeot decided to put cut on the threads of the resevior, so the pressure escapes!!

And all my one-way valves have died.

Have you checked the brake hoses ?

It is most likely that one of them has expanded internally thus not letting brake fluid through a supposed to.

I locate the compensators in the engine bay, down where the inertia compensator is on the 1.6 GTi, so that they are away from road spray etc, never had any problems with them there.

That's where they're located on 309 GTi's and they still fail in the same manner, although I'd not like to say whether it reduces the likelyhood of them doing so - in theory though they should be sealed and salt shouldn't get in there to cause problems (after all if brake fluid under pressure can't get out, then logically spray that's not under pressure can't get in)

All done now :D

Passed MOT about 1 hour ago. To be on the safe side I changed:

Master cylinder (standard 20mm dia 1.9 Gti one)

Removed both rear compensators

Swapped rear caliper & pads to the '01 Xara ones I have lying about

All is forgotten Peugeot :)
