Fitting A Boot Release Kit - The Low Tech Way

Recommended Posts

This post is an update of the one below, and I thoughtit would be useful to those of you who are equally as lame as me with a welder and wiring.

I decided to for the aftermarket solenoid kit. I located the switch in place of the cigarette lighter (using the live from this):

The wire to the solenoid goes under the carpet, behind the trim below the rear window, and is then threaded into the boot. I found the easiest way of threading the wire down the side of the boot was to -

1) Detach all of the existing wires that are already threaded down the side of the boot (they are all bunched together).

2) Tie a bit of string to the end of them.

3) Pull the wires out of the top of the boot (with the string still dangling out of the bottom).

4) Add the solenoid wire to the bunch.

5) Pull the string from the bottom, and it will pull the wires down the side of the boot.

To alter the direction that the wire pulls (from sideways to downwards), I simply used some araldite to stick a 90 degree noodle, with the end chopped off (from a mountain bike front V-brake) on to the boot catch. I used the cable outer from the V-brake to keep the cable taught.

The system works really well.
