Theo205 0 Posted October 25, 2006 Hi I had change my std. 70amp alternator a couple of years back with a 405 90 Amp but yesterday i noticed that the alternator housing has cracked where the big fat bolt holds it, the belt went loose and now i have loads of squeeling noise from the belt. Instead of changing the alternator housing i prefer to go and find anotherone from a Pug breaker yard but the problemis that 205 gtis and 405's are not easy to find . I'd like to ask if any of you know whether any other Peugeot alternator will fit on my GTi. 306 maybe? :S Thanks Theo
welshpug 1,657 Posted October 25, 2006 best bet is to take it off and have a wander round some scrappies, but basically any engine that uses the same configuration (pas, a/c or none as the case might be) will most likely use the same bolt config. when my brother needed one for his 306 DTurbo we just took it with us and said "got one like that?" it worked! Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted October 25, 2006 more or less any pug/cit alternator will fit, just a case of finding one with the right pulley for the belt
kyunis 0 Posted October 25, 2006 Is the 1.9 diesal the same alternator. As i may have a spare one. But posting to cyprus may be expensive.
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted October 26, 2006 1.9 derv will bolt on but it has more grooves in the pulley than the gti one. Fairly certain it would still dive on the thinner belt, or swap the bottom pulley on your gti lump for one of a derv and get the wider belt

welshpug 1,657 Posted January 9, 2007 yup, should be fine. a bigger alternator just means it'll be working at less % of its capacity to run the electrical systems, therefore in theory being more efficient, similarly with a bigger battery.
mickie 3 Posted January 9, 2007 thanks for the fast reply.. i think the 405 alternator looks much better than the old 205 one.. looks to be made better.. do you think it'll be more reliable tho ?? haha maybe not as its french
