Xu9j4 Mi 16 Engine Spec Experience's

Recommended Posts

Dazza

Hi ,iam a relatively new member to the Driver's forum .

Iam presently running a 205 gti with a 1905cc B6D SBC engine on webber's producing 140 bhp road power on there rollers and mostly use the toy on trackdays than road trips, toooooo hard and uncomfortable.

I have a collection of the alloy Mi 16 engines/box's and have wanted to install one for many years now .

Iam presently cleaning up a stripped down mi engine as i do build my own cars and engine's as a hobby ,i would like to get to 200 bhp if possible on a budget and would like to read up on some experiences out there .

I am building a more or less stock bottom end with a higher compression ratio circa 11.1 and plan to use the Cat cam inlet only or fit the billet paired 528 or 527 cat cam's .I will mildly polish the head port's (iam fully aware the head flow's well)

The webber 45's are new so there in the picture along with a newly built 4 branch exhaust manifold and possobly the KMS management for the ignition side of things .

On the gearbox side its either the Mi or origional 1.9 box ?

Whats your thought's fella's will this spec reach my project 200 ? here's hopeful.

Mi box is the best compramise for a road/track car. If it's more track than road then a 1.6 or 1.9 on 1.6 final drive is better.

As for power, I'd be more worried about surge than out right power.

Ive phoned Del and await the answer's soon ,ive just been comparing the cat cam's V Newman cams for performance and price , Both billet made.

out of interest was the SBC 8v on the carb's like mine ?

How do you like the roadspeed 16v verses the 8v motor for track use and road useage ?Is it any faster .and whats annoying you on track M3's and evo's i bet ......ha.

We use to take the Lotus and TI Sunbeam's down to skips a bit for tuning and other expensive ods and sods.....

Thanks for your input , dazza.

I had Piper re-pros (270ish?) - made 175bhp with everything else standard.

I can get 185hp with my Stage I inlet regrind, new management and individual coils. My Stage II inlet regrind makes 200hp with big valves and TB's.

I remember this. But it got hoarded with people saying "you couldn't have got that" "their rollers are miles out" bla bla bla.

It had the makings of a very useful thread if people had of just suck to what was asked of it. I also remember Maxi stating he didn't care what rollers people used and if people though they were out etc.

I do cause some controvisy dont I?!?!?!? :D:lol::D

I made 216BHP and 174Ibft torque, running a pair of the biggest catcams you can go on hydraulic lifters, 2.0 solid block overbored with forged pistons, 1900 mi crank, block decked, 1900 head skimmed as much as poss CR 11.5:1, a 306 GTi6 exhaust manifold mated to the XU9 head by me ( a lot of work but more than worth it), KMS Throttle bodies and Omex ECU.

All was Mapped by Chris Todd who previously worked at power engineering.

Standard Mi16, 45's, 3D Ignition 171 bhp, 150 lb/ft

Personal I would go management first then a inlet cam, as mine ran sick compaired to when it was fitted with mappable Ignition as i made an extra 25 lb.ft and 11 bhp (this was done at mikanices) ex SB techincain

You reckon it should be more for this overbored 2.0L spec engine?

As a comparison my 1928cc MI16 engine made 212BHP @ 7200rpm and 162lbft @ 5800rpm

All good stuff guy's keep it comin :D .

My thoughts are "old school big bold and bloody loud " ! i love the retro stuff

Auto-sprint Balanced bottom end ,more or less standard rebuilt with oil pump mods and baffles as its a 25% road car 75% track day toy . The years have taken its toll its got no trim or comforts , cage ,magnum's and a nice red fire extinguisher ! to keep me company.

The head is to be ported-polished -skimmed to raise C/R to 11.1 ,retaining the standard valves along with either Kent 290 supersports -Cat cam 528's or Newman rally sprint 288 cam's.

Fuelling is webber 45's (new) from my SBC 8v engine ,4 branch ex manifold .

Management's still a long thought ,either re-curved 8v dizzy or KMS management on the ford coil pack set-up ?Its all about 4-7K with me so iam not really to concerned with low down pull.

13 row PSA-SBC Mocal oil cooler from my 8v .

Group N mounts .

Fabricated ex system by Dan-Mar engineering.

As for the rest of the cars set -up its well up to the project 200 bench-mark ,and has taken some MIGHTY pastings on trackdays ,its done 2500 miles since its total rebuild of everything possible excluding the shell as its very tidy and well kept ...

No, quite the opposite! I was more than pleased with the power it gave... that was the last run of several, it was well into the 220's on the first run and kept losing a couple of HP each timedue to the 5 or 6 consecutive power runs. Chris couldnt believe the power either, hence he kept running it to check it was right....

Thanks Sean here's watchin !

RobSBC what was the wheels figure given at skips ? and what was your conversion calcs of drag losses % .

I do think everyone becomes driven by bhp figures when these rolling road guy's can give you many different results with in minutes .......Its not the most important thing to me at all ,although it does give you a rough sense of whats going on.
