Stripped My Beam Last Night...

Recommended Posts

nick

I stripped my 309 beam last night ready for lowering. I heated the torsion bar housing and belted the arm a few times, the bar came out quite easily to my suprise but I then noticed that the trailing arm shaft had moved about 1/2 an inch. As the shaft has a few ridges on the top bearing surface (I should replace it but I'm tight!) I thought I'd heat it some more and pull it out and turn it 180 degrees.

After a bit of heating/hammering it plopped out, so I turned it round and heated/hammered it back in.

So it is possible to change the shafts at home with just a domestic blow torch and a big hammer, no need for 20 tonne presses at all!!

cool! one thing though, it will now be a looser fit in the arm due to the wear by the bearings!

shouldnt be a major problem if you pin it tho :)

Not sure what you mean by pinning it??

The bearings are new and the shaft had minimal wear with no play whatsoever, I thought I might as well turn it round while it was out.
