Banging, Knocking, Squaking, Creaking, Clunking

Recommended Posts

Just trying to sort my car out so that its minty fresh but have too many small problems and not enough knowledge to comprehend and diagnose them all.

I have a fast 'knock, knock, knock' sound round corners and on acceleration - is that one of the driveshafts?

If it is, what is it that fails and does the whole driveshaft need to be replaced?

I also have a very dull knocking coming from what appears to be the rear, the rear also creaks sometimes when I have a passenger in the car.

The whole suspension (front and rear) squeaks loudly as the car goes kangarooing up the road in traffic.

When going to pull away slowly or if I let off the throttle then feather it back on I get a dull but audible single hollow 'clunk' sound from the front right.

Any ideas on the above very much appreciated :D

sounds like the beam is shot, try a search on "beam" There not cheap to sort out :(

also knocking sounds like a drive shaft.

Knocking under load will be the driveshaft, easy enough to do yourself for about £60.

Front knocking over bumps will be drop links, wishbone bushes etc.

Rear squeeks and noises may be rear beam as said above, cost about £150-300 to fix, depending if you do yourself or pay someone.

If you're keeping the car, probably best to refresh the whole suspension - beam, springs/dampers, bushes, driveshafts (in your case), drop links, etc. That will set you back between £500 - 900 depending who does the work. :D

Cheers for the replies.

I would love to refresh the lot but I guess i'll do the driveshaft and front wishbone (both droplinks are brand new so I wouldn't have thought they'd be the problem). I'll probably then save up a bit and do the rear beam which doesn't look too hard to do?

None of these problems appeared to be there when I first bought the car but then it was left standing for about a month so I guess the rear beam could have seized over that time :(

Is the price you quote for secondhand driveshafts?
