skeggyrik 3 Posted October 3, 2006 Well I've been busy and my rear beam is all apart. New shafts required etc, I was expecting what I found having looked through the posts. I can't believe the thing still worked of a fashion having looked at it. I've come up against a slight problem though. The torsion bars came out from the stud end both sides. I'm presuming I'll need to remove the torsion bars form each of the trailing arms for when the old shafts are pressed out and new ones pressed in. Here lies the problem. Offset washer and torx bolts will not shift despite being cleaned up and lubed. The torx isn't that deep and I ended up rounding one of them. It was almost there before I started . So I then tried a large cross point with the impact driver and ended up with perfectly rounded centre What's' the next step? Drill the head off? Any other advise? While I'm on has anyone bought beam refurb bits a from pug dealer in the Birmingham area. Any recommendations, I don't want to be buying 10 of everything Thanks
taylorspug 7 Posted October 3, 2006 Drill the head off mate. 90% of the beams i do for people these torx bolts wont undo, so i just take the head straight off with a 12mm drill and replace the bolt.

Was hoping someone would say that as I can do that tonight Do you find the shaft of the bolt comes out easy enough after you've done this?
taylorspug 7 Posted October 3, 2006 Yep just turns out with some pliers/grips.
max0 5 Posted October 3, 2006 i also did the above, just be careful not to go to far with the drill and damage the tread on the torsion bar.
sonofsam 5 Posted October 3, 2006 You dont need to drill the head off, you can tap the bolt round with a sharp punch and a small hammer!
littlemike 0 Posted October 3, 2006 I weld another bolt or a nut on top and undo that. Not much use though if you haven't got a welder! :lol
jonnie205 1 Posted October 3, 2006 Yeah no need to weld or drill just hold arm in vice and tap round with chisel
Theo205 0 Posted October 3, 2006 You dont need to drill the head off, you can tap the bolt round with a sharp punch and a small hammer! I'll double that. Did the same with mine. Good luck refurbishing the beam.
welshpug 1,657 Posted October 3, 2006 just use a good quality torx bit and clean out the screw head first, and give it a sharp tap with a hammer to ensure it seats well in the screw, as well as beaking any seal it migh have due to corrosion or tension. bit late there tho
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted October 4, 2006 An impact driver usaully works on most of the ones I've stripped if the torx bolt head isn't damaged. Only one That caused a problem was eddscruffs when we were adjusting the ride height & one was thoroughly seized in so we welded a hex headed short bolt on to it & that worked a treat. Graham. skeggyrik 3 Posted October 4, 2006 Thanks for all the replies. I tried the give it a tap and lube method. I made sure my brand new torx bit was all the way home before trying to undo it and it started to round so I stopped. I then tried the impact driver which nicley removed what was left of the bits to bite on. Will try a punch to get it off, had not thought of that, glad I posted. Failing that it'l be a 12mm drill bit and take the head off as I don't have the welding gear. Cheers Rich
