Hallo to all you 16v enthusiasts. I've got an Mi engine and box but no car. Can I start it up sitting on the sump? :o

Why do you want to start it up?

Put a spanner on the bottom pulley and turn the engine. That will let you know if it's siezed or gonna bounce valves.

It's not an outright 'yes' the engine's gonna work solution but it's probably safer.

i know a fella that did it with a TU engine, he concreted eyelets into his drive and strapped the engine down tightly. 'twas a few years ago but iirc he was doing it to test a custom built wiring loom without doing it on the car and then finding there was a fault. Amusing but i dont see any real point in it

Get some solid lengths of wood and make a frame up to attach the mountings to. Should hold it steady enough if you screw it together really well. Making the frame on top of a pallet would stop the sump banging around on concrete aswell.

how is it top heavy???

best way to test the engine outside of the car, you'd need a big radiator and fan though to keep it cool :o

At uni we built a simple structure to mount the engine on for the dyno, it was literally just a box structure made up with beefy steel with solid mounting points for the engine, pretty simple really if you have a welder and some decent bits of metal.

Wouldn't like to start an engine up on something flimsy though!

We had loads of those engine rigs at college. We used to get them revving flat out then twist the dizzy around and get flames shooting back through the carbs at passing students :D
