Raising Mi16 Idle

Recommended Posts

Bonzai

the idle on the Mi is a bit too low for my liking, its very lumpy, hunts between 600 and 1000 rpm and stalls when approaching junctions until its warmed up a bit although it still does it occasionally. This is my worst fear as i know from experience that 205 starter motors arent the biggest fans of hot starting

now ive done the obligatory forum search and the vast majority of returns was from people wanting to bring their idle down. In any case, there seems to be mixed opinions on wether there is an adjustment screw on the TB or not. There also seems to be a small allen key adjustment in the ICV and a couple posts in the forum search mentioned a screw in the AFM.

Im not about to go and play with these things on a prayer that i can sort something, so if someone could give me a definative response as to what i can and definately should not do please...

Regards, Ben

The idle on the Mi is usually good is it not. Mine idles well even with a few tears on the tb to afm hose.

I'm using the 16v 355 3 ow ECU which does a really good job of controlling idle as it doesn't drop the revs on one big go like at the end of a road or junction. It will drop normally down to 2k and the gradually down to just below 1k.

maybe there are other issues causing the bad idle like breather pipes or fouled up tb or the likes. Better to start with probable causes than to try and adjust the end result.

thanks for the response. ive checked all the pipes, theyre clean as a whistle and no obvious splits either. Ive tried repositioning the AFM but its made little or no difference to the idle.

The only things i have done which have made a small difference is to spray some carb cleaner in the ICV to try and clean it up, and adjusted the throttle stop slightly which should give the engine a little more air to play with.

From playing about with it, we believe that the ICV is just not reacting fast enough to stop the engine stalling when cold, i havent really had a problem since. I have a spare ICV, i will test it when it stops raining to see if it makes any further differences.

Other than that i have now changed my driving style. In my old 8v engine i would dip the clutch at any revs because <1500 it would kangaroo on me. With the Mi16 i am slowly building up my confidence to ride out the engine braking all the way to ~1000 rpm which gives the ICV more of a chance of catching the idle

It could be a problem with the throttle switch; does it click when it moves to idle?

My Mi16 idle is very good and always around 900rpm even with the airflow meter pipe fell off; it ran very rough but still idled.

What ECU no. are you using btw?
