5150maxie 0 Posted September 29, 2006 could i use a engine support beam and lower the engine from underneith?or is it better to use a hoist?if so would the beam in my garage roof support the weight?what do you think?
mickie 3 Posted September 29, 2006 if you used a engine support beam to lower the engine how would you go about pulling the car over the engine ? i thick your garage roof beam would break in two, if i were you i would just spend 20 quid on a hire engine hoist
5150maxie 0 Posted September 29, 2006 if you used a engine support beam to lower the engine how would you go about pulling the car over the engine ? the support beam has a adjustable height bolt.so i can lower it to the floor then pull the engine out from underside(the car will be in the air on jacks to be able to clear the engine)it only an idea as i dont want to hire an engine lift twice
Pugnut 9 1 Cars Posted September 30, 2006 i run a scoffold pole along my garage roof as long as possible at 90 degrees to the trusses . i attatched a lever hoist to the pole to lower the engine/box onto a trolley, then attach the lever hoist to the car and lift the whole front of the car up until the engine is clear to trolley forwards. depends on the size of you're roof trusses etc (mine are 6x2). a pug engine/box isnt really that heavy really but you would need to spread the weight over as large an area as possible. Daxed 7 Posted September 30, 2006 Don't try the roof beam without getting it tested / being damn sure it can handle 3 times the weight that you are planning to lift. For the money saved by not hiring the proper equipment it isn't worth the risk. You risk having to start a new thread asking peoples opinions on how best to rebuild a garage or how best to get around without toes. Lower the engine with a trolley jack to the floor. Jack up front of car and support with axle stands, slide engine from underneath. Or, hire a suitable hoist.
steve@cornwall 100 Posted September 30, 2006 Lower the engine with a trolley jack to the floor. Jack up front of car and support with axle stands, slide engine from underneath. Works fine for me!- remove inlet manifold for clearance, and completely remove lower mount bracket from subframe to avoid bending it when re-fitting! Bumper and valence may be removed to avoid damage, but not necessary. Engine and box can be dragged reasonably easily on your own!
Dream Weaver 2 Posted September 30, 2006 I took mine from underneath when replacing it, but it was a ballache so for £40 I would hire a crane twice, or borrow one from someone you know.
