bucky 3 Posted September 27, 2006 how would i know whether this has been done or not to run on normal unleaded?- 1.9gti. cheers!
Jonmurgie 2 Posted September 27, 2006 Hi and welcome to the forum You don't need to do anything with the timing to run unleaded in the 205, though Optimax (sorry, V Power!) would be a little better for he car You can adjust the timing to make the most of the fuel though, best done on a dyno I've found as you can adjust it while under load but granted not everyone has easy access to that. So, for me I say you should be getting some pinking (detonation) under load at anything below 4k RPM, but above that is should all be sweet... so you can adjust the timing a little, test it and re-adjust until the pinking stops at 4k if that makes sense! Might also be worth having a go with the search as I'm sure this type of question has come up from time to time
bucky 3 Posted September 27, 2006 (edited) ok thanks. i plan to run on optimax anyway but i thought if timing had been changed to run on normal 95 i wouldnt see the benefits(if there is any!) ive been searching threw squillions of threads and couldnt find the answer to my exact question. so say it had been adjusted slightly to stop pinking when using normal 95ron and i started using optimax without correcting the timing would it mess up the running of the engine or at least make any noticeable differences like lack of power? edit: i might have read the above post wrong. when you say you can adjust timing to make the most of the fuel are you talking about normal unleaded or optimax/"v-power". i hope you dont get pinking running on the sul fuel it is designed for! jackherer 543 Posted September 27, 2006 if its had the timing retarded so it runs on 95 ron it will be pretty flat so if you can advance it a few degrees without introducing pinking on optimax you'll notice a difference for sure.
westy 0 Posted September 28, 2006 How would you describe 'pinking'?
Jonmurgie 2 Posted September 28, 2006 It's like metallic taping/tinking... in the 205 it's can be quite obvious, but if yoru unsure then take the car to someone who knows them to setup for you BTW, when I had the timing setup on my old 1.9 8v on the dyno it gained 11bhp over the previous timing, which was nice. Must stress though, that wasn't 11bhp on top of the standard figure, after that it made 125bhp...
