My Mi16 Turbo Project

Well after some more ebay lunacy i am now in possession of a sierra cosworth 4x4 inlet plenum, throttle body, fuel rail and inlet trumpets to add to the IHI VF35 turbo i have from a scooby sti for my custom turbo project i'm planning.

(I don't think i'll use the fuel rail or inlet trumpets, don't think trumpet holes line up with mi16 head anyway)

My plan so far consists of this:

o Use standard freshly rebuilt mi16 engine

o Fit thicker headgasket to lower the compression as the head was skimmed an unknown amount when it was rebuilt

o Build a homebrew exhaust manifold, similar to the PPC BMW home made effort. I'd probably use a Mi16 exhaust manifold cut down into a collector.

o Use a Mi16 inlet manifold cut and welded onto aplate which bolts onto a Sierra cosworth inlet plenum, this has the benefit that the throttle body faces left and so allows easy routing to an intercooler and then to the turbo

o Megasquirt MSII with fuel and spark (hopefully fully available by the time i come to getting it - currently alpha versions released)

o Oil feed from turbo fed from T piece from oil pressure switch

o New sump with oil return for the turbo welded onto it

 

Ive got a few questions about the inlet manifold someone might be able to help with

 

1. On a Turbo application does the length of the inlet tubes from the head to the plenum matter? i've seen lots of comments on other posts about "tuned lengths" for throttle body applications but wasn't sure whether this was applicable for turbos as the air is being forced in.

2. You can see from the pictures that the tubes have a trumpet end on them on the inside of the plate which backs the inlet plenum, if i'm going to be welding a cut down mi16 inlet to a plate would i need to fit some sort of trumpets on the inside as well or would a flat plate with holes surfice? i don't know the importance of these trumpeted ends

In answer to your quesitons:

 

1. No, not important on turbo application.

2. I guess a flat plate would surfice but it would be better/nicer to retain the trumpets if at all possible.

question 1 - same as atmo - only difference is you have boost so yes it does matter -where do you want the torque peak is the question!!!

Standard pistons going to be OK are they?!

 

BTW, you dont need 16 valves once you have a turbo:P

 

Does that throttle body face left as you look @ the engine bay from the front?

Right well got conflicting answers to my number 1 question so anyone else care to add their thoughts so that one answer seems more right than the other :P

 

Yes this certainly will keep me busy :D but will keep me out of trouble and stops me hanging round outside shops and binge drinking in the local parks

yeah it faces left as you look at the front of the car, so the turbo will go above the gearbox where the battery is (will move that to the boot) then have ducting out of turbo into the right hand side of the intercooler the out of intercooler on left hand side and up and to the throttle body.

 

oh anyone know what type of intercooler this is off? i had a scan on ebay but didn't find much

Matt if you want a nice cheap intercooler, it may be worthwhile looking around at some secondhand truck intercoolers, would be ideal for a performance turbo application IMO, without breaking the bank. Not sure what would fit etc, but hey, its just an idea! :P

yeah i was looking on fleaby and did spot some cheapish second hand ones

this is one off a ford galaxy turbo diesel not a truck but getting that sort of size

Nice and thin also.

as requested to elaborate. Turbo's boost yes so ultimately they can mask problems and restrictions. However flow is flow and tuned lengths are tuned lengths. Get it right and you could pick up a lot of low down torque when off boost for instance which could make the car much more driveable.

That is definitely a Renault Master TD intercooler - 100%. I've got one fitted to my 405.

Hi fella ,wow now this is lunacy ,the BRAKES you need are of a scania 400 sei (air cooled) .

Seriously now though we are building a Mk 1 golf GTI from a bare shell with a big spec in mind and its having a G60 corrado supercharged unit ,hope to achieve circa 240 bhp and we are using a Merc Sprinter Intercooler as there big and cheap !.
