Hello,

i fear i may be asking one of the most basic of questions, but what is compression ratio and why is it good if its higher? :D:)

It's the ratio between the cylinder and combustion chamber volume with the piston at the bottom of the stroke, and the volume with the piston at the top.

It's not necessarily good if it's higher! The compression ratio effects how much the mixture is squashed and therefore has an impact on the temperature the mixture will ignite and the speed of burn.

A diesel engine has a very high compression ratio - this allows the fuel to be compressed to the point where it self-ignites.

check out wikipedia as a start
