Mi16 Tappets!

Hooray! It started within a fraction of a second of turning the key and settled to a steady idle after over a year of sitting there doing nothing! :o

 

However, despite following the letter of the Pug Mi16 rebuild manual, the tappets are noisy as hell :(

 

Anyone know if you just need to let them fill up or is there something more sinister at play? :blink:

Heh, not quite! It's running naturally aspirated at the mo until it's run in :blink:

 

However the tappets are really noisy, giving cause for concern. :o

They do take time to fill up, just take it for a drive and they should quieten down.

make sure you have a good quality oil filter fitted with a non return valve.

Smart move, I'll do that myself + I intend to run without the turbo for run in period, as metal parts in oil might damage turbo bearings. Or I'm just being paranioed

My thought was that we could use a map for an Mi16 on TBs so that we can safely floor the gas to get the rings to seat with out the turbo spooling up and melting something.

 

Will of course keep an eye on the AFRs once the gauge group buy comes off but our thought was that it reduces the variables if the turbo's not there to start with :)

I don't think that will work. It will be fuelled correctly up to 0 kPa, then the turbo will start to spin and it won't get any richer. I'd set the boost part of the maps conservatively rich and the same with the advance curve. Limit the RPM and set the limiter to an ignition cut rather than a fuel cut.

 

The lifters should come good after 10 mins. at 2000 rpm.

Know what you're saying Peter, but we've just installed the standard Mi16 manifold for the running in so the turbo's not part of the equation yet :blink:

 

That's good to hear about the tappets though! :D
