if it's a proper knock, then i'd say big end shells are shagged, if it's more of a rattly knock that isn't consistent with engine speed, then it could be the release bearing on the clutch or input bearing in the box.

I've been told you put your foot on the clutch, and the knock should go away if it is the input shaft from the gearbox

Is this true?

ANYONE?

I double checked my cambelt last night as i had some pinking that has now gone ( think the belt was too loose ), i've now only got a small rattle from the bottom end/gearbox i tried the foot on clutch thing and the noise didnt stop so think ill have to remove the box then start the engine again to see if its still there

Thats correct mate, if its the input shaft to the box, then the noise would "dissapear" when the clutch is pressed in, and if it was the clutch release bearing the noise would "appear" when the clutch was pressed in. However, these noises are more of a grumbling than a knocking.

Hope this helps

Faraz
