Creaky Steering - Rack And Lower Collumn?

Recommended Posts

Faz85

Morning all,

Firstly, i know this has been covered before, i've done my best to try and figure it all out...but im still a bit hazy on the topic...

so basically i have attributed a creaking noise during steering to be coming from the U/J of the lower collumn, and have decided to replace the rack and the lower collumn...i have found this on EUROCARPARTS...

SASIC n/a 613735001 STER COLUMN LOWER 205 -PAS FLAT EDGE NON SPLINED

Lower Steering Col W/o Power s

Its the only lower collumn which comes up, but im a bit confused...(non splined? flat edge?) is that the right part and will it include the UJ? my GTI is a 92, without power steering. oh and if anyone knows a better place to source the part, im all ears!

Thanks in advance

Faraz

Are you sure its the column thats creaking?

I was convinced it was the same thing on mine but it is the top joint of the drivers side drop link that does it on mine.

If your steering creaks it's usually your suspension top mount bearings that are worn forcing the rubbers to move instead

All the ones I have removed have been splined? Probably easier to pickup one from a scrappy - didn't think that there was any difference between the models?

i didn't think ECP (or GSF) did lower columns - good find!

how much is it?

not sure if it'll fit yours though - doesn't the description imply that it's for a PAS car? (but then it says it isn't in the second line of the description - ?!) it also sounds as though it's the later square pinion fitting. my '91 was a square pinion, so i guess your '92 will be too

if it's definately the lower column (top mounts does sound more likely), then it's worth checking out. need to be sure it'll fit a non-PAS car though (not sure if there were any differences in lower column between PAS and non-PAS). it'll come with the u/j and they aren't difficult to fit. Genuine Pug ones are about £60 btw.

Tekno - not sure of the change over date, but earlier columns were splined circular pinion fitting and later ones were non splined square pinion

Cheers for the replies guys, its very much appreciated...i had a chance to get it on axle stands this afternoon after work, and the verdict...

looks like its not the rack or collumn after all...had a look at the droplinks (thanks Nick) and the rubber is all split, so im guessing ive got some water in there and its corroded itself silly, i held the top of the link in my hand as i rotated the wheel and can literally feel it grating away nicely, so replacing these is at the top of my list of things to do next.

hengti...cheers for the info on the pug collumn, ECP want £30 for the lower collumn, so quite a bargain on peugeots prices (no surprise there), but i have no idea on quality...anyone had one of these collumns from ECP?

i just read a recent post on droplinks from eBay, so im gonna give them a go at that price! i shall report back if the new droplinks solve my creaky steering...

All the best
