Mi Oil Surge - Head Design

For my 2nd year HNC (Mech/Eng) course, one of my units is Projects and I've decided to look into the Mi oil surge problem. Mainly because there is plenty on here about it and that was all I could think about at the time.

 

I want to concentrate on the head design though. My plan is that because of what I've seen on here about the head design restricting the oil from returning to the sump, and also read a few snippets about putting an oil return from the head to the sump, I would concentrate on this not so much sump design/baffles, even though I can also use this as comparitive designs.

 

My biggest problem is not really having an engine which I can take apart to get pics from and so forth so can anyone help with this?

 

Does anyone have any decent pics which show the problem oil galleries?

 

Does anyone think that there would be any serious issues doing this (would rather find out before I commit to the project!). For example, would fitting an additional oil return effect any other areas of the engine, such as lubrication of any of the bearings or anything like that? My technical knowledge of the engine is pretty weak.

 

My lecturer has told me he is willing to lend a hand with areas like flow rates etc and one idea was a return pipe that had a flap which opened under certain pressures (enough to cause the surge problem).

 

Has anyone attempted this before and if so, what were the results.

 

Any input/help would be highly appreciated.

i thought that there was an arguement suggesting that it wasnt about the design of the head not allowing oil back down to the sump quick enough becuase the head dint fill with oil?

Seems a good idea.

 

Maybe best putting a thread up in the wanted section for a scrap worth mi head.

 

I had to do a similar 'project' for OND mech/eng, but i did on Clutch mechanisms and alignment tools.

 

Do a big search im sure you'd have half of your project written for you, weighing up cost to solution value etc.

I did projects for the ONC a few years back, IVA they call it.

 

I was hoping I would be able to get a bit more info or advice on this thread before I started searching as i'll be reading through pages and pages to find what I need!

Certainly I'd be interested in an answer! There was a lot of speculation on whether this was the problem with this engine. Personally I feel (from what I've read, my engine is still as yet unfitted) that there are a number of problems. The drainage from the head, the large oil demand (oil sprayed pistons, 16 hyd lifters etc) and the sump. There was some theory on the fact that one of the drains from the head ended up under the oil level (this is how I interpreted it anyway!) in the sump under certain conditions and there for this is why it wouldn't drain. Well if this was the case the oil would drain due to hydrostatic head, irrespective of it it exited under or above the oil lever.

Either way if you find an answer to this you'll become a MI God! Good luck!

I've cut up a scrap head before to look at this.

The problem is the oil return on the cambelt end is less than ideal.

The return the gearbox end is much better.

I'm pretty sure I've dumped the head but I'll have a look for it.

Matt, any more info as to why it's 'less than ideal'?

 

If you could get a scrap head that would be hugely appreciated.
