Guest mattyj Posted September 21, 2006 Hi my girlfriends s16 developed a knocking/tapping noise. i thought it was coming from the top end of he engine, so planned on doing an engine flush and new oil and filter. just got around to doing it now about 3-4 days later and the car won't start but it did previously 3-4 days ago. the car has good oil pressure 4 to be exact on the guage, also all 4 plugs have a good spark and its getting fuel no problem. Could this be a crank or big-end problem? how involved is it to take it off with the engine still in place? any other suggestions? thanks Matt
welshpug 1,666 Posted September 21, 2006 first thing to make sure is drop the oil and unbolt the sump to have a look inside, if you get metal coming out with the oil start to worry...
Anthony 1,003 Posted September 21, 2006 Is it quite a deep knocking sound, or more a ticking or light tapping sound? Bottom end is normally a deep knock and will likely get significantly worse if you give it a few revs, whereas a tappet would be more a ticking/tapping type sound. deejay391 0 Posted September 21, 2006 Could this be a crank or big-end problem? how involved is it to take it off with the engine still in place? any other suggestions? need to unbolt pas bracket (bracket covers one of the front sump bolts) alternator out, flywheel plate off, then undo the bolts holding the sump and take a look, to take crank out would mean flywheel off and theres hardly any room so im gonna take my whole engine out to sort mine. Cant see why it wont start, maybe immobiliser, did it have a dodgy battery? Good luck.
Guest mattyj Posted September 21, 2006 Right, i've done a conpression test and the results are a little low at between 95 psi and 140psi, the upper being with a drop off oil. i've now got the car started too, don't think that had anything to do with the tapping noise. Did engine flush and put in new quality synthetic oil but still noisy. i don't think its the crank, its definitley comin from the head. i reckon it could be the hydraulic lifters, are these an easier job, is it just a case of taking the cam off and wippin them out? do peugeot still produce them? any other suggestions? Anthony 1,003 Posted September 21, 2006 A little low? Either you've got a very pessimistic tester, you weren't doing it right (got the throttle open, yeah?), or you've a problem - you should be getting 180-200psi on an S16...
Guest mattyj Posted September 22, 2006 yeah got the throttle open, but was thinking that if it was the lifters then this might be contributing to the low compression. i'll test my gti 6 with the same tester today and see if its me, the tester or whatever else. Guest mattyj Posted September 24, 2006 right checked it out and looks like the tester is pants as my six that runs great was coming in with low readings too. as for the s16, i think its the hydraulic tappets, if i take them out is there anyway of telling they are knackered? or can i tell if i wip the cam cover off and turn the engine over? thanks Matt
