Track Rod Ends....are They Knackered?

Recommended Posts

Doof

I got some new track rod ends from Euro Car Parts the other day, one side went on ok, attached to the hub fine etc. I couldn't tighten the other side up onto the hub though, inside the track rod just spins.....so i took it back and they swopped it for a new one....guess what, it does the same!!!!!!

So are these TRE's actually broken or am I doing something wrong, theres no other way that i can see to hold the TRE with a spanner to stop the middle spinning.

I will actually murder them if a second one is foobar'd!!!!

Cheers,

Lewis

all you need to be doing is pushing the balljoint up into the hub arm

it's easy to do if you've got a trolley jack - just carefully jack up the track rod end (just enough to nip up the nut). i've managed the same loads of times just by lifting it with a knee

OK - not certain I can help -but if by track rod you mean the drop link between the antiroll bar and the hub carrier - then the trick is that the bolt at each end is hollow and will take an allen key. This allows you to put a spanner on the nut and tighten or loosen.

Hope this is the answer- because I felt I right idiot when I realised the hard way.

Cheers for the replies guys, hengti was right, the part that goes into the hub is tapered to if you force it in a little it locks up and enables you to tighten the bolt.....kinda feel bad for taking the other one back and cursing them so much now :)

Cheers again....this forum is seriously so damn good!

I just wish every suspension and steering component had a "wellness" sensor so when things play up you can pinpoint exactly where the tired component is.
