Intresting....

Well, the story goes, my mate bought a low mileage 35k 306 S16 maybe a year back with a horrible knocking bottom end, he then swopped the engine from another S16 he had already broken for parts and that was that.

A year down the line he's donated it to me as i need the XU10 sump and some working oil spray bars

We took it round to my place yesterday and upon taking the head off we have found this

as you can see various parts of the piston are totally clean as if someones skimmed metal away revealing the fresh stuff underneath.

Other 3 pistons are normal, didnt look to closely at the head, but it appeared to be fine other than an obviously far richer mixture on this cylinder(fouled plug)

All will be revealed when i open the bottom end probably tomorrow, but i cant work this one out. only thing i can think of is, maybe the rod has snapped and its been impacting on the head?

Btw cant remember if it ran on 3 when it was in the car, it was totally gutless though, and the knock was horrific, so quite possibly.

Any bets on whats caused this?

Possably loose rob bolts on the piston or excess wear giving it a bit too much free movement. That piston could have been flapping about like a sausage up an alleyway!
