Stinking Car

Recommended Posts

driversdomainuk

Hi

I did post a message last year about this, but cant find it. Basically, when my 205 is in the garage (where it is always kept) it stinks of oil/fuel - even when it has not been run for two weeks. I am wondering if there is a leak anywhere - cant see anything obvious (i.e engine bay, underside of car). It does not appear to be coming from anywhere directly - it just stinks out the garage and is starting to get into the house (g/f not happy!!!)

It is running twin 45s and is due for a rebuild soon. Is there anything obvious which could be causing this I have not mentioned?

thanks

Rob

I would also like to know about this as mine stinks when it's in the garage. I think on mine it's a bad seal on the fuel pump under the passenger seat but I haven't got around to checking.

They do pong a bit generally. Nothing much to worry about IMO if everything is in good order and there are no fuel leaks obvious.

It will be worse though if they're running a little on the rich side. If the smell is more a "fresh" petrol smell then it is very likely venting from the filler cap. The seal is not that good, even when new.

The oily/burned pertrol smell I think mostly emanates from the engine breather system and permeates up through the oil pot, into the induction tract, through the AFM and out of the air filter. There is no PCV (non-return valve essentially) to keep the stink in the crankcase, just the gauze in the oil pot. These smells are remarkably penetrating and not a lot neds to escape to cause a right old stink.

Are you running aftermarket induction? This may well make it more noticeable, especially if the mixture is on the rich side.

Jim,

Thanks for the post. I've been trying to find a petrol smell from my car especially when starting from hot. Checked all the usual petrol supply and return hoses both in the engine bay and near the tank. Although some of them aren't the softest rubber anymore there doesn't seem to be any splits or leakages.

Rob,

The thing that I have found while stripping a car in the garage recently that really smells is gearbox oil. I left it drianing over night and then left it open in the drain bowl for a couple of days and everytime you open the door you could really smell it. Petrol tends to evaporate pretty quick, especially this time of year.

Also, has anyone fitted a PCV to stop the petrol smell?

Thanks,

John
