M@tt 77 Posted September 18, 2006 As you'll probably have read i'll be needing a new gearbox as mines been damaged in the crash However rather than a straight mi16 box replacement i'm contemplating getting one with a 1.9 FD as i personally find the box quite short and as a daily driver sitting at 70 at 4k or so makes any morway driving quite painful. I've been in hernys skip with this box setup and found the gearign perfect but his is a turbo. Opinions please
Jonmurgie 2 Posted September 18, 2006 That combination certainly will make for the longest gear length... 70mph would be 3k rpm looking at the gear ration excel sheets here: http://www.mdracing.co.uk/gearbox.asp Not sure if it may make the whole car feel a bit sluggish though... Ahl 4 Posted September 18, 2006 Doesn't sound like a good idea to me either. Also 70 @ 4k sounds more like a 1.6 box. The mi16 sits at about the same revs as the 1.9, just under 3.5k or so at 70.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted September 18, 2006 Matt, thats the gearbox I recently sold to Henry for the Turbo Skip. Imo it is to long for an Mi & would take all the fun out of having one. 1st - 3rd are the same as the 1.9 gearbox with 4th & 5h being longer. The longest box I'd get for an Mi is the one I have on my car from a 405 SRi but even then its not a top speed box. (1-3 = 1.6, 4th = 1.9 4th & 5th longer, an Mi box with 1.6 FD). Mi should be showing approx 3250rpm at 70mph. Graham.
M@tt 77 Posted September 20, 2006 cheers for the replys in that case it sounds like i might have a 1.6 box on mine then, alhoug it could be the speedo out due to a possible combination of mi and 1.9 worm gears in the speedo cable housing ting on the gearbox causng the speedoto misread
Dream Weaver 2 Posted September 20, 2006 I think mine has a 1.9 box on it, and tbh it makes it far too slow on pickup. Our Beemer is quicker off the mark than the 205, and its a diesel!! I'm going for a different box next year.
