Rear Wheels Locking Under Braking!

Recommended Posts

pee vee

Hi all,

noticed my car under heavy braking wanting to lock the rear wheels first!

(standard 1900 gti 205)

any ideas what this could be down to???

im about to upgrade (in a couple of weeks) to gti-6 brakes and possibly a 406 MC.

any ideas if this will cure it??

Just had a quick search about it,, only thing suggested is front brake callipers worn out :s but i dont think they are.

brake force generally is not too bad.

thanks.

:)

Is it a road car or a stripped track car?

its actually quite normal in small pugs due to the very light nature of the rear ends!

if i'm going to put gti6 front brakes on it,

would it be best to remove the compensators?

or just renew them??

thanks for the ideas so far guys!! :)

i used to think this, but my compensators failed the MoT this year, so i replaced them and so far haven't had any lock ups from the rear. it's boring, but it's saving me flat spotting any more tyres!

i think someone else has a thread on the go at the mo about doing away with the compensators; has Anthony said he runs GTi6 fronts and no compensators without any porblems? best have a look around for the thread

Both my 205's run Gti6 front brakes on standard master cylinders and they have the compensators removed. Both of them lock the front wheels before the rears.

thanks for the help guys.

looking at Removing/changing the compensators, ive read a couple of posts on here about them being Hexagonal blocks in the brake lines

under the bonnet..

BUT having found a picture of these, the only place i can see them on my brake system is right down by the Rear beam , one on each brake line.

(its Non ABS and an 89-90 car) so it is the hex type ones im looking for.

did some cars have them right under there!??

thanks!

As far as I know all 1.9's (without abs anyway) have them fitted where your are -by the petrol tank. 1.6's only have one which is larger than what 1.9's use and it's under the bonnet.

You can get brake pipe joiners from any motor factors that will be a direct replacement for the 1.9 compensators.

forgive my asking, are the compensators actually limiting the pressure sending to the rear not amplifying? if my assumption is right, will removing the compensators release more pressure to the rear and induce more rear locking?

thanks.

Yes removing the compensators makes the rear brakes do more work, but this is ok if the fronts have been uprated to Gti6 calipers as it helps to get the front V rear brake balance back.

so, as a ff car when the front is working more effective than before, the weight will transfer more & faster to the front too. in this case will the rear be lighter and more easy to lock up even with stock rear brake?
