Leon C 1 Posted September 15, 2006 Does the thermostat need 1 or 2 seals for my gti? If 2, are they the same type on both sides of the thermostat?
Revla 2 Posted September 15, 2006 The 8v housing uses 1 seal that goes over the stat edge. The 16v uses a seal either side of the stat............. HTH
hengti 2 Posted September 15, 2006 i've had to use more than one on my 8v before (due to corrosion of the 'stat cover mating face) - should be one seal but, if you're having bother getting it to seal, you could try two
Revla 2 Posted September 15, 2006 Or use some nice blue RTV......
Leon C 1 Posted September 15, 2006 Mine isn't really a tight fit when the housing cover is fitted over it. - It has 1 seal fitted to the back (bulkhead end) of the stat at the moment. I reckon it may leak...
Revla 2 Posted September 15, 2006 (edited) The single seal type should be one with a groove in the seal so the stat fits into the seal............ Edited September 15, 2006 by Revla
hengti 2 Posted September 15, 2006 i've never managed to get that type (^) to fit - the stats i've had have always fitted into the recess very snuggly - i tried and couldn't get them in with a seal around the rim of the stat. the ones i've used have just gone under the housing and on top of the stat RTV sounds like a good idea if it's leaking
Leon C 1 Posted September 15, 2006 It won't go into its housing with the one fitted over the 'stats edge... Ah well, looks I'll just have to buy another flat seal.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted September 16, 2006 Most of the XU5/9 ones have two seals, one each side of the thermo. The XU10's have the wrap around seal, at least all the ones I've done have been like this, both 8 & 16v. The thermostat cap is different for the single seal type, the flange has a deeper insert that sits in the housing. Graham.
