Silly Question

ORB

OK

So i have a crack in my exhaust manifold, its quite a long crack and it pisses smoke out into the engine bay.

I am going to weld it up at the weekend but i wondered what effects it is actually having on the engine?

what issues would it cause?

I am not driving the car yet, it is just my project, but was intrigued what issues it would have to the car?

it wont be drawing properly into the exhaust system, causing exess backpressure and loosing power.

plus heating up the engine bay, thus loosing more power!

Hi

Im a firm believer in no question is a silly question... we're all at different stages of learning when it comes to pugs ( but maybe thats just because I ask a lot of silly questions!!!) Most people on the forum from what I have seen are very understanding to new questions, otherwise the forum wouldnt work.

I cant help much with your post as I currently have exhaust issues too!!! But I will be watching this with a keen eye! From what I know ( have been advised from fellow members) is that again, to re-iterate, no major mechanical drawbacks, just a loss of power ( and a sense that your pug just aint right!! worst of all!!)

Michelle :)

that was my theory

the other fun thing it has caused is the exhaust fumes coming into the heaters inside the car....

Not funny at all ORB, Exhaust gasses, especially on a NON-CAT motor contain Carbon Monoxide (CO) which is an invisible, tasteless, deadly and insidious poison that kills you by ripping oxygen out of your red blood cells.

Sod any effects it may be having on your Pug, think about the effects it may be having on YOU :) Get it repaired or replaced as soon as you can. The Pug can be fixed when it dies, you can't.

I'm not 100% sure welding will be a long-term fix. cast iron is funny old stuff to weld.

Most, if not all of the XU engines of that period have the same manifold so I wouldn't bother welding. Just find an XU 405, split the nuts off the studs and pull the manifold off. You will need to get it skimmed but that shouldn't cost much, and refit with Peugeot gaskets.

The manifolds fail because they are a different metal to the block and heat (and hence expand and contract) at different rates. But I've heard that knackered engine mounts can also cause premature failure of the manifolds so you might want to check that.

I was always taught that cast iron + welding = explosion?

No.... best way is if you can preheat the manifold in an oven first, then weld it.

If you do the down pipe quite loose (obviously so that it doesnt't blow) it allows a bit of movement which helps prolong the manifold life. (WMMS told me they do that on cars they prepare).

I had the same problem with a cracked manifold a few years ago, I had the manifold brazed and that cured the problem.
