Engine Swap Help.....

Recommended Posts

ORB

Ok, So i know it 'will' fit but all engines 'will' fit with a bit of messing about....

But, I have the chance at 2 complete cars, with the view of robbing the engine and placing them in my little 205 1.6 GTi...

I have a shot at:

- Xantia 2.0 16v

- Xantia 1.8 16v

Will these engines go in with minimal work?

What are the issues i need to be ready for?

Is the swap worth it regarding power gain and the like?

What can you tell me?

Thanks guys

Another Xantia killer revealed :):lol: Try driving a well set-up Xantia before you rip its heart out. They're great cars, especially in 2.0 form.

Seriously, yes you can. They're all XU engines and to a greater or lesser extent they'll go in. There have been shedloads of previous threads on these conversions. Lots of work to do. I'd go for the 2.0 personally as I don't think all the woerk of putting the 1.8 in is really worth it. The Engine of choice of course is a 2.0 Xantia Turbo and these can be picked up pretty cheaply these days.

But is it worth it? Only you can decide that. Personally, I love the frenetic, high-revving, fun and cheeky nature of the 1.6GTi and would personally never do anything to change it's essential character which an engine change most certainly will do. Having said that, a 1.6GTi is now pretty tame by todays standards and a 2.0 16v should give it a tremendous amount of go.

Issues will be plenty. The most major will be electrical ones.

plus the fact that the 2.0 only has 135bp and a few kilos heavier.

wiring shouldnt be a problem as long as you have the haynes manual iwth the wiring diagram on, will be harder than an mi16 but not difficult, thou you will need to unlock the ecu on the xantia before you pull it out (start car, unplug keypad, stop car).

You may have issues with the gearbox, i know some of the boxes fitted to the 406 wont fit in a 205, dunno if this is the same with the xantia. And yeh, there is the matter of 112/135bhp from the 1.8/2.0 respectivly. Would go up a bit with a gti6 exhaust manifold, decat and filter, but personally i would just enjoy your 1.6gti if its working happily. After many cars and many engine swaps, ive decided the most fun you can have is with a totally standard 1.6
