Strange Water Temps, And Power Fluctuations

Recommended Posts

Ok, from the start i though my mi16 205 was down on power. rolling road suggested otherwise.

since the RR ive replaced the inlet for a shortened one,and replced the dizzycap and arm.

seemed to gain heavy induction noise, but was so unresponsive it made me angry!

up until this point ive had a bx rad, with only high speed fan wired up, it cut in and kept temp steady at around the third line from end of guage, ie 2 more then red. the oil temp stayed2 bars from the LEFT, and would rise one notch when thrashing it. fitted with standard water/oil exchanger.

in order to fit the aircon pump i stripped off the oil cooler and put the gti rad back in. the pump didnt fit as its too fat, so i put the oil filter on without any cooling block under it.gti rads back in and everything looks a lot better in the bay. i noticed the rad switch had 101c on the side, so i threw it away and put a 97-92 92-87 switch on (17quid ffs). i removed all unnecasary water pipes, bunged the thermo cap up, broke the main pipe from it so replaced the cap again.also removed the water pipes to the throttle body.

now when i idle, nothing changes, temp rise to the same position. but when driving im back to how my original mi16 205 ran, water temps up the gauge 2-3 bars and oil up 1-2 bars. when in traffic it warms up the the previous position then fans turn on.

has removing the water/oil exchanger done this? or fitting the gti rad back in? the original 1.6 was the high running temps all the while...

also to add a more intresting twist, even though im running 95 ron fuel at the mo (im being cheep) it seems to be way up on power and pulls from 4k as it should... foot to the floor in second for example, when it hits 4k the wheels start to struggle for traction.

the only other thing ive done to it is tidy all the relays under the bonnet and finished shortening and routing the loom.

sorry its a bit long winded, but im puzzled as to weather these problems are combined or electrical...

sorry just remember a previous thread... my running temps before tody can be seen here, now there more like pugtourqes... does this mean my moters been running too warm?

Colder air in terms of the engine response im sure you already know will make a big difference.

As well as the engine temps being lower overall. However youve fitted a lower thermostat so theres your answer.

Water temp sounds about the same as my 1.9 so i wouldnt be that worried about it, just wire in a fan overide switch.

If your cars got more power that using 95 rather than 98-99 ron fuels then something is definately amiss. (assuming ambient air temperature is the same)

It will be the exhanger yes

I ran nothing and a tin sump when I ran in my current Mi and coolant was on the 4th bar up and oil at the 3bar up (one after the first fat one)

When I swapped to the normal oil and the 13row air/oil cooler went on my coolant and oil now both run 2 bars up. And on trackti goes ot the third if it's a hot day

richard i kept the existing thermostat, just the cap i broke was replaced. i changed the fan switch, but it made no difference to the temp on the guage the fan kicks in at.

im saying about the fuel, i normally run 99 ron, and its always seemed sluggish and takes a while to pick up.ill try 99 tomorow. but yesterday it was sluggish with 95 and today with same fuel and similar outdoor temps its noticably quicker.

im guessing the only answer it less heat soak and cooler underbonnet temps then... as driving temps water is down 3bars easy and oil at least 1 bar lower.and this must be reduced after removing the oil warmer/cooler! weird!well happy tho:P

The std heat exchanger fit's from the 205, so use that not the 16v one if you want it fitted, but this will exhange the temps between the two and when giving it some, will result in very high temp's,

Fuel makes hardly any differance as the ECU you run is very basic, only newer car's you will notice a differance,
