willxs 0 Posted September 13, 2006 when i turn left, with acceleration, i get a knocking sound and a shuddering sort of feeling through the steering wheel. at first i thought it was the driveshaft, but after replacing it today (as the other one was completely knackered) i was abit anoyed to hear the noise again.... but its not as bad as it was before. the car has gti-6 callipers, xsi wheels, 195/50/15 tyres and lowered 40mm on standard shocks. it never seemed to do it before, only really noticed it when the shaft went. only thing i can possibly think it being is the engine mounts? im sure there pretty worn, but i dont know.... any suggestions? luggy 13 Posted September 13, 2006 Hi Willxs Which side of the vehicle did you change the drive shaft?. Check that every all nuts and bolts are nice and tight, with that sort of noise its normally 1 of 2 things either a dodgy cv joint or a wheel bearing. When was the last time the wheel bearing was changed? Luggy
Guest wg22 Posted September 14, 2006 (edited) Yeah, I've had that kind of problem before and it turned out to be as simple as a loose bolt........(the lower arm mounting bolt I think) Edited September 14, 2006 by wg22
trickywoo 0 Posted September 14, 2006 Jack it up and get someone to waggle the wheel while you look at the lower arm mounting points. Any play and thats your problem. Could also be the droplinks. Mine did something similar and turned out to be a shot balljoint.
willxs 0 Posted September 14, 2006 i'll check the nut on the shaft, but they dont need to be that tight as they have the pin going through to stop them coming undone. as for the ball joint, thats fine. was replaced a couple weeks ago, still nice and stiff and i made sure it was in properly and the nut was nice and tight (had mishaps with those before) the CV on the new shafts was quite stiff to move around, not sure if thats how its supposed to be when new but i dont know. dont know about the wheel bearing, theres no history of it being changed, but i thought you'd notice that more often than when just cornering? Cars costing me a fortune at the moment
Guest wg22 Posted September 15, 2006 i'll check the nut on the shaft, but they dont need to be that tight as they have the pin going through to stop them coming undone. I'm presuming you mean the wishbone mounting bolts? Because I've found that if they're not done up pretty tight you can potentially get movement at the wheel........ willxs 0 Posted September 15, 2006 i ment the big nut at the end of shaft, but i duno, i'll check the lot. any other suggestions to keep my eye out for?
welshpug 1,657 Posted September 15, 2006 not need to be done up tight???? whatare you on?? do em up properly to 192lbft....
Guest wg22 Posted September 15, 2006 A torque wrench is always a good idea
welshpug 1,657 Posted September 15, 2006 especially when doing up suspension and brake componenets, even more so when you see how cheap they are.
willxs 0 Posted September 15, 2006 The big nut on the end of the driveshaft? it doesnt need to be done up cronicly tight? it has a pin which stops it from coming undone. obviously it needs to be tight, but surely not that tight?
Guest wg22 Posted September 15, 2006 Yeah, not sure the correct torque for the driveshaft nut, but it wouldn't be that causing the knocking anyway.........
welshpug 1,657 Posted September 15, 2006 do em up properly to 192lbft.... as I said earlier.... the pin is there as a last measure, in the unlikely event that it does come loose, but still depends on you realising that something is amiss, a simple 3mm mild steel pin will not stop a nut coming off if its forced The driveshaft nut is the one that takes the highest torque on the car, the wheelnuts of a pug need 62lbft in comparison Also, its not likely to be causing the knocking, but its not unknown, especially if its not done up tight enough... Guest wg22 Posted September 15, 2006 Sorry, thought you meant 192 for the wishbone mounting bolts.......not the driveshaft
