Guest ashnicholls Posted September 13, 2006 I have just rebuilt the engine with new sump gasket, and used a gasket sealent either side of it. I ensured both surfaces were clean. And torqued the sump up to torque setting in the Haynes manual. But it is still leaking. What shall I do? Torque it up some more? Im just always scared of stripping threads on blocks. sorr 0 Posted September 13, 2006 (edited) The first time I did mine a gasket and sealant was used, and it leaked. Replaced it with a gasket only and no more leaks. This may sound odd, but I think the problem is that too much sealant is used, you actually need very little for a seal. To answer the question I would try a new gasket and not just tighten the bolts more. Given the number of bolts there will be considerable pressure put on the gasket with the bolts at the correct torque so if it does not seal now it is unlikely it ever will. rescue dude 0 Posted September 13, 2006 Took me three attempts to get my 1.9 under control. I now don't fill the oil to the max on the dipstick and warm the engine steadily before i push it. Grim.Badger 15 Posted September 14, 2006 Not long done mine with just the gasket between the sump and spacer and sealant between the spacer and the block. There's no leak between the sump and spacer but there is weepage between the spacer and block so I'd try it again with just the gasket if I was you.
